Week 19 - ITF 50k Kurume JPN grass

Harriet not in the qualies so presumably upgraded to MD to join Naomi, Em and Katy there smile

Official MD entry list shows Naomi at #4; Katy #15; Em at #17

It's quite a 'Kurume' draw ...

L32: Katy Dunne WR 284 v (1) An-Sophie Mestach (BEL) WR 114 (CH 98 in Jan)
L32: Harriet Dart WR 396 v Aleksandrina Naydenova (BUL) WR 314 (CH 264 in 2013)
L32: (5) Naomi Broady WR 237 v Susanne Celik (SWE) WR 217 (= CH)
L32: Emily Webley-Smith WR 307 v (3) Eri Hozumi (JPN) WR 158 (CH 144 last Nov)

A big drop for Naomi in the new rankings today (down 51), since her points for winning the title in Fukuoka last year have now come off and she was upset in R1 this year, a net loss of 79 points.

It seems a bit strange that, despite the draw being made today, they have used last weeks rankings....

If Harriet was fully fit I'd be confident she'd win that, but this is her first match back. Katy could spring a surprise as Mestach hasn't had a great trip. Em I think will find that too tough, not been a great trip to Japan once again for her this year on the singles court.

Em and An-Sophie have tough doubles draw too against the highest unseeded pair which includes Em's nemesis Sawayanagi

Actually it is standard practice ( in fact I would imagine basically the rules ) to use the previous week's rankings whenever the draw is made with the 'late' starting Indian Wells and Miami tournaments the only exceptions I am aware of.

Has to make sense that the seedings are not influenced by when the draw is made and everyone knows how things stand.

2 wins here would be a success but it could be 0 easily enough. Best hopes Naomi and Harriet. Naomi could easily be outside top 250 as I thought come Wimbledon which will be interesting as already discussed. Looking at her points it ll actually be very difficult for her to remain top 300 after Wimbledon.

I would very much hope Naomi will at least be top 250 at the start of Wimbledon. Her already guaranteed points ( 178 ) would have her just outside the top 250 on current rankings ( last week they were right on the mark ).

I would hope that she will at least get some grass court points before Wimbledon. Her form, while variable, I think is good enough to have some optimism about that.

Of course at Wimbledon itself she then has her R2 points defense.

R1:  Makoto Ninomiya & Riko Sawayanagi (JPN/JPN) CR 398 (145+253) vs (2) An-Sophie Mestach (BEL) & Emily Webley-Smith CR 303 (140+163)

Katy loses 63 64

Em loses a brutal first set 13-11 in the breaker. Had set points at *7-6 8-7* and 10-9*, saving 3 herself before Hozumi got it.

Hard to find a way back from that.

Sometimes I think the points system in tennis is nearly as daft as the way we end up with a government nobody wants. Unfair at times and rewards those who don't deserve it. Poor Em.

Em misses four break points and then broken.

1-2*

Sigh

Missed another break point and broken again

1-4*

This is going to be a frustrating loss. Had plenty of chances.

Same old story for Em it seems as I expected. Time to jack the singles and go doubles to prolong the career.

Em loses 76(11) 63.

Could have been a very different story.

Japan has not been a happy hunting ground for the Brits this year.

Tough trip for Katy.
The good news is that Harriet is a set up and Naomi has started well.

After commenting about the good starts, Naomi lost the first set 7-5, having lead 3-0 and Harriet lost the last 3 games of the second set to go into a decider.
