Week 16 - WTA Premer ($731K) - Stuttgart, Germany - Clay

Another unkind draw sees our gals up against the Australian Open champions, and in the much tougher half of the draw.

R1: Jocelyn RAE/Anna SMITH (GBR/GBR) 174 vs. Bethanie MATTEK-SANDS/Lucie SAFAROVA (USA/CZE) [3] 59

Highest level tourney they've ever entered, save last year's UK grass. I think that the AO champs are quite surprised to be so; Safarova has't won another doubles match in 2015, W/L 6/3: without 2000 points from Oz, BMS would be ranked below Anna and Joss. So they might have a decent chance.

A much weaker field than i was expecting so a bit unfortunate to get a seed.

Not great, but at least they gave it a go, and gained some great experience. I'm sure they're counting down the days until they get on the green stuff.

Bethanie on twitter with a subtle dig at Bouchard:-

"After shaking our hands our opponents said they really enjoyed playing the match even though they lost... #HowTennisShouldBe #LoveTheGame"

Non-GB Tangent
A while back I mentioned my admiration for Angelique Kerber, and was met by a chorus of 'meh!' (and far less positive than that).
Well, every time I watch her, I seem to see the Angie from tonight in Stuttgart; highlights here
