The Great British Summer of Tennis (one more week)

Right as always I will be taking off down the country for some spectating at the grass court events.

This year we have 4 weeks for the 1st time, and much more choice of events.

Been racking my brain as to which events to attend and have now come up with an initial itinerary ( may change when the acceptance lists come out )

I'm afraid Eastbourne is out, as its a helluva long way to the south coast for just the ladies. Shame as its a great venue, even if the hotels are expensive and not much value for money. The 2 London events Surbiton and Queens are also off the list for the time being. Finally my initial list doesn't include Birmingham which is a bit sad, but I'm fed up of paying for car parking and its not an event where we are likely to have any British players left in the draw past Wednesday.

So my provisional list is as follows:

Manchester Men's Chally 1/6-7/6 (midweek for a couple of days )

Nottingham WTA 8/6-14/6 ( full week inc qualies up until Friday )

West Ilkley Joint Chally event 15/6-21/6 ( full week inc qualies up until Friday )

Nottingham ATP 22/6-28/6 (full week inc qualies up until Saturday )

Love to catch up with any forumites during those tournaments ( saw Paulisi and Priesty last year ) and I've seen several others in the years before that.

What are everybody else's plans ?

Keep a window open for Surbiton, even if just a slim possibility. Only went the once but it remains one of the best days tennis I have had to date.

Got a far better idea for you Phil. Get yourself over to Madrid during the May day bank holiday weekend.

Easyjet: Liverpool to Madrid, flying over Sat 2nd May and flying back Weds 6th May = 95 pounds return. Both evening flights so you would get 4 full days of tennis - Sun to Weds.

Hotel Praga: 4 star, approx 60 euros per night + 10 for brekky. Although there is a small cafe just along the road run by an little Italian guy where you can get a "tostado" and a coffee for about 3 euros. www.hotelmadridpraga.com

Transport from Airport to hotel and back: Free of charge. I will pick you up LOL.

Ground pass per day: 6 euros.

Likely GB players. Andy, Jamie, Dom, Heather. Possible in qualies Wardy and even Kyle (?). Also a chance Laura would get a WC if she is back playing by then

What does the ground pass cover?

There are about 12 courts in total and the ground pass coves everything except the two main courts (centre and 2). However, you can even get into Court 2 on certain days.

Having said that, Centre court tickets are also very cheap in the early part of the week. The only start getting expensive on the Friday. Check out these links for pricing.

Sounds attractive, I mean apart from the company obviously ;) But I'm going to have to decline, got the British Tour event from Newcastle to cover w/c 27/4, and a man has only got so much tennis viewing stamina in him. One day though, one day. I'll throw it back to you, why don't you pop over to blighty when the weather might not be too cold for you and watch tennis with even more Brits about. It's a shame we'll be past the football season, as you could also include a trip to Elland Road.

I've only heard good things about Surbiton, won't write it off completely, but us Northerners can't cope with too much time in Southern lands ;)

Oh, I'll definitely get over for a UK tournament in the not too distant future. Just got to fit it around my time in Brazil. Beechy keeps trying to get me over for Wimbledon. Guessing it would be impolite not to take him up on that offer at some stage.

Phil - I should be at Didsbury for the weekend and a couple of the afternoons as it is only 20 mins from work. Didsbury is a nice venue and it is right next to the station if you want to stay further out and catch a train.

Also may look at getting to Ilkey for a day or so - this is a new venue, but heard good things. Especially keen as I've not seen the ladies play for some time(never in the north west)

May also do a day or so at Birmingham depending on who is playing.

Yes Didsbury, only found that out when I was looking for hotels. I've provisionally booked a hotel ( only a 6.9/10 on booking.com ) with some interesting reviews to say the least which is basically on the doorstep ( respectablish prices ), so it will just be a short drive to the club.

Yes I really fancy Ilkley as its a joint event, and I've never really been to that part of the world eventhough I've lived in the NE for over 30 years ! I think they've played futures there before, but not a big event like this. Liam was very positive about the place when I spoke to him at DC, said it was a lovely little town as well.

Regarding Birmingham, if for instance Laura was playing there, I might pop over for a day, but its a 3.5 hour drive to Ilkley from there whereas from Nottingham it's only 2 hours.

Whatever the final plan, should get to see you a few times by the looks of it.
