Katie's not been having a great deal of luck in her draws.
She's been getting apparently very straightforward qualifying wins when not getting byes or walkovers. Then so far, just having one main draw match each week when drawing a top 500 ranked seed.
To my mind, she seems to have done encouragingly well, and about what I would have hoped for, in these matches. But it would be very good to have more this week.
I've been so focussed on the DC that I hadn't realised this was Katie's 3rd tournament! Given her display at the Oz open you might have hoped already that she was playing top 500 tennis , but maybe she's feeling a bit nervous. If she can get one win on the board she may race through and win one of these tournaments.
I've now read through all the comments of the 2 previous Sharm tournament threads. I have to agree with CD that Katie isn't quite as good as the hype might make you believe. Before the Oz open you would have never predicted that result. She was a promising junior but not an elite one. Doing what she did there though made her one. But it was only one tournament, now she may have made sudden progress, but I'd like to see more evidence of that level of form before I was certain. Having said all that I would expect her to be able to beat top 500 players as long as she was close to that form, but her results so far suggest she's a bit below that level.

I would agree with Philwrig. She built her junior ranking pretty steadily over two years with the Aussie open jumping her up a little unexpectedlY. That said, her progression seems to suggest she learns pretty quickly through experience (e.g. Junior Grand slams so far: 1st round, 2nd round, finalist). Whatever happens this week I anticipate she will apply the learnings pretty well.
If I recall correctly, CD thinks that too. His issue was with the hype that seemed to be eminating from other quarters, basically outside the forum including, to both of us, extremely surprising apparent comments from Judy Murray in which she mentioned next year's Fed Cup.
Looking at everything she has done to date, and her general progress, I see no reason to have been particularly expecting more in Sharm. She has waltzed through qualifying matches and played two competitive main draw matches with top 500 ranked seeds, the first a very competitive 3 setter with the winner of the Sharm title the week before, who as a result of that title is now up to the 420s in the rankings.
Any overhype is not Katie's fault and that hype may have unfairly brought greater expectations. The girl is still 15 ( she turns 16 on the 24th of this month ).
Anyway, nice to see such a better looking main draw this week. Hopefully, she can get a few more matches this week.
