Andy is right to prefer grass for this fixture

why ?

A) 3 Wimbledon. ( grass )  champs in squad

B) middle of grass season

C) won't be french favourite surface

D ) lots of local SE venues

E ) players /support team London /SE based where there are numerous suitable venues and grass Training facilities

Grass is clearly the best venue for the tie. Murray will have won 12 matches in a row on the surface and there won't be any other choice, really.

Will also suit Dom & Jamie who hopefully might team up with Dom for some of the grass season tournaments

France have players like Gasquet and Tsonga (if he has returned by then) who would love a grass court - we would definitely be hoping for Monfils/Simon to play if it was on grass.

Pretty sure Bennetau/Vasselin/Mahut would be fans of grass as well for the doubles.

Saying that... obviously we would be hoping for Murray to win two matches on grass and I guess grass would be some sort of 'equalizer' for Ward.

Interesting.

does anyone know why we have a home tie again ? is it just the luck of the draw ?

While I have been making the same point as spud about many of the possible French team being more than comfortable on grass and thus I have not been so sure about its advantages or that it's a "no-brainer", I guess one clincher may be the timing, although it apparently rules out Wimbledon itself.

Not that it is in the British summer ( you are still allowed to play tennis on indoor hard courts ), but that it is specifically the weekend after the Wimbledon Championships finish, when our guys will have just been playing hopefully lots and lots of matches on grass ( Andy winning 12 matches in a row :) ) and I would hope more than the French.

We will be home to France, because last time we faced them in Davis Cup it must have been in France ( can't say I remember it ) so it's our turn.

1992 Bayonne (indoor carpet) - they won 5-0

The last time we played them at home was in 1990 at Queen's (the last time we played a DC tie at Queen's in fact) and they won 5-0 there too.

The last time we beat them was on clay at Roland Garros in 1978 and the last time we beat them at home was in Bristol back in 1964!

Gilles Simon says in an interview that:

they don't care which surface is chosen;
it'll be a bit strange playing a very unbalanced team,
and given the timing i.e. straight after Wimbledon,
But the strength of the French team is their depth in numbers,
they've got players for every occasion,
So they're pretty cool and laid back about the choice,
and grass is fine as they'll all have been playing on grass for the month before anyway . .

You just keep thinking about the GB team being very unbalanced and only bother about Andy, Gilles :)

Our four vs your four, should be good !
