Rankings

Eden Richardson should have 7 points for coming through Manchester qualifying?

The ITF points go on one week after the tournament so that'll be next Monday.

The points go on on the first Monday, ie today 18/06, for all tournaments above 25K level. However, Eden is not ranked yet because that is her only counter ( need either 3 counters or a total of 10 points ). 'Just' 6 points by the way since women qualifiers don't get any R1 losing points.

Edit:  ie as per Tom. For info the 12 points is the WTA matches summary doubling all points for players that start in qualifying. Been going on at least since the last WTA site revamp!!  But yes they get the actual rankings right.

STEVEN will have to find other new players for a top 25. Maybe a top 20 would be easier - thanks to the LTA. Worthevery penny cry

I'm back this week, so able to post a screenshot of the updated rankings table as per christ's earlier suggestion. Great to see last week's updates.

(Edit edit: And finally worked out how to insert the screenshot too biggrin)

This week Harriet (+9), Maia (+14) and Jodie (+46) are the main movers, all with CHs, as have also Beth and Fran. There is more downwards movement than up amongst our top 10, again with the downers led by Laura (-21). Totals are -38 vs 15 (net -23), only Harriet, Katy D and Tara moving up.

At the bottom of the table the last 12 people all move down, a fairly clear indicator of how the LTA's grass court tournament decisions don't benefit the lower ranked players (albeit Ella Taylor did jump +300 places last week through gaining 1 WTA Q win, though even that is not an experience building run of wins). Several amongst those 12 have of course also retired now, or are no longer playing singles (Olivia Nicholls), or are still injured (Mandy). But to have no new players in the rankings during our 'home' part of the season, shows too, how it is only those firmly established on the ladder that the LTA has any eyes for at this showcase time of the year for itself.

I think we did have one new ranking in the lower half, Michael, during the grass court season - Nell Miller.

Funnily enough, she looked very promising at Surbiton but then didn't play any of the other events.

Love the screenshot, by the way

All beyond me (tech twit) but if anyone could do it once in a while for the men, that'd be nice too......

Mega congrats to Beth - into the top 500 !!!

She works hard, that girl, and doesn't have much help really.

Another big group of girls sitting just on the edge of the top 500 too - time for a push !

There is one less player in that bottom 12 that is not playing as Mirabelle makes a welcome return to the entry lists. Currently at 14th alt for the Belgium 15K in a couple of weeks, we'll see where she is after the withdrawal deadline but I'm hopeful she should move into qualifying. It will be interesting to see how well she does.

As just noted in the Southsea thread, Katie Boulter has just gone past Naomi B into the GB #3 position... Katie is up to a live ranking of 135, Naomi currently unchanged on 138.

Next week's rankings have already been posted on the WTA website, with yesterday's Eastbourne final the last result to be counted. There is only in change in position in the GB rankings, but the significant one of Katie B's move up to GB#3. Overall the average of the top 10 moves up this week.

Since this is the end of the grass court season outside Wimbledon itself, the other point to note is how GB's lower ranked players basically have not benefited from this 'home' season. The lack of support for home players to get onto the rankings with not a single grass court tournament of even 25k never mind 15k shows in the lack of general progress for nearly all those players outside the GB top 10, save for Jodie, Beth and Ella, all of whom essentially made some progress on a single big pointer win (rather than being able to build a run of wins). The number of GB counters also still stands at 32 as it did at the start of the grass season, with Nell having replaced Ola Pitak in the rankings.

Interesting to note that we have 5 players with 3 or more points who are unranked, and another 13 who have one or two points. What a difference those 25k or 15k tournaments could have made !

Yes exactly, we could easily have had around another half dozen added to the rankings if we'd had at least 3 lower tier tournaments in parallel to the 100ks plus that did not cater for the majority of our women players. And once added, it would then have been much easier for those women to go and test themselves out elsewhere, since at least their tournament entries would have been much easier. A completely wasted opportunity, once again with the LTA's over the top and wholly unnecessary completely elitist strategy. no

Good stuff up top, well more particularly the group of 5 on the rise.

Further down we will finish the grass season with still 9 of our 32 ranked players needing at least something before year end to retain a ranking. One of these is Emily Arbuthnott who I expect to manage that comfortably ( she has her first counter of the summer and more will surely follow ). Another is Mandy Carreras who essentially surely just needs to get fit again. So we no doubt will reach the year end still able to fully populate a top 25 table. And even if we do lose some of the rest ( and we no doubt will ) hopefully there will be some replacements.

Theoretically dates players could lose their ranking during the remainder of this year :

Laura Deigman - 30/07/18
Emma Hurst - 13/08/18
Olivia Nicholls - 20/08/18
Emily Arbuthnott - 17/09/18
Suzy Larkin - 24/09/18
Amanda Carreras - 08/10/18
Mirabelle Njoze - 29/10/18
Alice Gillan - 29/10/18
Tiffany William - 12/11/18

Mirabelle now has a MD acceptance in Belgium next week, which is good to see. It will be her first tournament of the year.... I hope she is able to recapture some of her early promise when she returns, and has shaken off that depressing slump she experienced in Tunisia last year.

Laura D and Suzy are "retired". Mandy is probably out for at least 3 months. Olivia N, has more or less, given up singles.

Only Nell as a newbie, We will be lucky to have 30 ranked.

Do we know Suzy has retired from the tour for sure, or is it an assumption that is being made? She had entered some tournaments earlier this year although did withdraw from them. I know she is playing local tournaments in New Zealand - she was in the team that finished runners up in the Chelsea Cup earlier in the year and is in the semis of the Mixed Doubles in the Next Gen Club Championships with Anthony Wu, seeded 1.

Here is the post-Wimbledon women's rankings update. Unfortunately, as can be seen it was not a great end to the grass season for the Brit women. The main movers up are Katie S, with her first round win, Sam, and then Fran and Emma R, the latter two simply by virtue of their participation in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying. There are also CHs for Katie B, who moves up 5 places, Harriet, Katie S, Maia, Fran and Emma.

In the GB top 10 the average moves down this week, mainly owing to the combined -48 for the falls in rankings of Jo, who falls to 50 and Heather, whose fall below Katie B is now confirmed and quite significant. Altogether the downward movement in the top 10 is -26 (-66+40). Katie S also nudges ahead of Gabi into the GB 6 position.
