RE: Rankings

I just tried to work out Emma Rs points total. She seems to have played in 8 events of $25K or higher this year and if the point for qualifying in a $25K, which occurred twice, is added to the main draw points I make her total 126 points against the WTA's 124.

I think the points are correct. Here's her points tally which has the two q points included. It's just her ranking position that is not fully clear. What's impressive is that her ranking is from only 9 events, and most are QFs and above at W25 level. Emma has plenty of upside, depending on how many events she plays again in 2020.

Yes that adds up OK. I had mistakenly put her down for 10 points for losing R128 rather than 2 points for losing Q1. I didn't add any points for the $15K because there aren't any any points for $15Ks listed in the table on page 232 of the WTA rule book.

On the 16th Dec they had Emma at 73 points, ranking 500 up 22. On the 23rd Dec they had her at 124 points, ranking 371 up 129. On 30th Dec they had her at 124 points, ranking 374 up 126. It looks as if they probably have her ranking OK but not the change.

Yes, you're right Peter, in the end OER have settled for the WTA ranking, but have Emma's position change at the correct -3. For the week the top 10 are unchanged, but both EWS and Tiff William lose points and ranking positions, so the GB All is -37. That takes the year GB All total to -873 and the year GB top10 total to -191. May 2020 be a more positive one!

Thanks for the table, Michael. I'll use these rankings for the starting point for the predictions competition (not that it affects the end result, just the entry for Status Quo !)

The live rankings sites OER and live-tennis both have Naiktha up 3 places to live 199 on 06/01.

Since nobody can add points this week that should be her entry into the top 200 secured.

Yeah and I'm wondering if Status Quo will submit her own ranking this year... just to confuse things - or simply go with the flow again!! biggrin

Here is the first ranking table for 2020. There is very little movement on it except for Harriet's loss of her Brisbane points from last year. And congrats to Naiktha for breaking into the top 200 for the first time!

For this year I have also added one column to show the change in each player's ranking across the year as a whole. I wasn't sure at first whether to show the start ranking for the year or the cumulative change. I tried the start ranking but it makes the table less clear as three rankings in a row - CH, start 2020, current ranking - is confusing. I also note that Steven's tables also show a cumulative change across the year, so I've gone with that metric. The sum of that metric will also show the cumulative GB change for the year.

At the moment we are still waiting for the first counting wins of 2020. If Katie B, Sam and Katie S win their FQR matches in Bendigo they will each get a solitary 1 pt to start this!

So Week 1 points come off already? So in effect this is Week2. How confusing

Not really. The start of the year in terms of showing ranking change is the last ranking week of 2019. This is Week 1 not Week 0. The anomaly was having a Week 53 last year.

Well it is confusing in that corresponding weeks from last year no longer match.

So Brisbane points from last year fall off one week but are not replaced until week after.

Its the same on the ATP side as well. (i.e. Norrie loses 150 points from Auckland this week but does not get chance to defend them until week after)

It happens every few years. Blame the 52 weeks plus 1 (or 2) day calendar which means tournaments have to effectively start a week later about every 6 years.

Points are still added and subtracted by the calendar week even though week 1 is later this year.

So ...
06/01 : last year's 07/01 additions (WTA week 1 ) come off.
13/01 : last year's 14/01 additions (WTA week 2) come off and this year's 13/01 (WTA week 1) add.
20/01 : nothing off ( last year mid Aussie Open ) and this year's 20/01 (WTA week 2) add.
27/01 : no rankings, mid Aussie Open.
03/02 : last year's 28/01 additions (WTA week 3 & 4) plus 04/02 (WTA week 5) additions come off and this year's 03/02 (WTA week 3 & 4) add.

I think the easiest way to look at it is just forget 'week's and basically, as normal, all points come off on their calendar anniversary of being added in or ( if no rankings update that week ) on the next ranking date.

As said, ATP works the same.

This weeks rankings still see little change for the year so far. Katie S, Gabi and Naomia lose points and ranking positions, otherwise change is minimal, but this coming week there will be more change, with a greater number of players in action. Heather is already back in the top 100, currently LR 91.

Last week had two birthdays as well, Emilie has just turned 20 and hope to see her back in action soon, Maia is now 22.

Here's week 3 at the start of the AO. 1 pt on for Katie B, otherwise the only other gainer, and large gainer of the week is Heather, who goes up to a very healthy WR 75, 26 places up from last week. Yes the AO could bring about a lot of change around her, but this is still a very encouraging start to the year for her.

Heather also makes sure the top 10 are net positive for the week. There will be change in that post the AO, with both Mandy and Fran moving into the top 10 as it is, and Katy D and Katie B moving out.

Overall though the year has started with a slow slip of positions which continues this week... -12 for the week and -39 for the year. A few more positive weeks would be good to see, but unfortunately in the post AO rankings the starting point is a current -121 position drop for Katie B after she loses her 70 points from last year's AO. cry

This week's post AO rankings show an encouragement of green, but relatively little of this is owing to players adding new points to their accounts. Those that have are just four in number - Harriet, Mandy, Fran and Tara. Sam and Jodie added 2-3 but that was it during the last two counting weeks. There is at the same time a huge fall for Katie B as she loses her AO points from 2019, and falls also for Naiktha, who also lost AO points, Gabi, Naomi, Emily App and Ola Pitak.

Overall the good news is that our top 10 have a net increase in points, thanks to Harriet, Mandy and Fran. The latter two move back into the top 10 rankings, replacing Katie Ba and Katy Dunne. I'll leave the overall top 10 maths to Strongbow but I make our top 10 to be +33 this week with Fran and Mandy just about compensating for Katie B's fall within the top 10.

Congrats to Emma R too, who is just the second player so far this year to achieve a new CH (the other being Naiktha). Emma has achieved it though without playing a tournament so far.

However the whole picture is a negative one, with our women altogether done -37 for the week and -76 so far for the year. Every week so far this year has been a losing one (even if it is just the 3rd counting week), and the most obvious reason for this is the low participation rate of our women, especially in the lower echelons of the rankings table. This is the cost we could increasingly pay for the lack of ITF tournaments within the UK, and especially any W15 events designed to get young players onto the rankings ladder (or those who've had layoffs back onto it). We have a distinct lack of new players coming through onto the rankings at the moment. Tanysha was in fact the only new player onto the rankings for the first time last year, showing just how little change there actually was, especially in terms of new players gaining a WTA ranking. Without an increase in participation numbers though in ranking events we will continue to struggle to show positive gains in our net overall position, and in terms of new faces.
