Rankings

For anybody wondering why OER has not updated this week, I sent them a query last night and this is the response I got:

'We aren't on leave, no. But data from our live system backend has been completely wiped out and recovering it has proven difficult. We are busier than ever recovering it and placing multiple safety mechanisms in place so that sabotages like this are avoided in the future.

Thanks for your patience!'

Thanks Michael, I was wondering about OER.

I'vs been going back to live-tennis which does tend to leave doubts

Yes, I much prefer OER, and it seemed something strange was going on this week... and it is. Obviously a pretty massive problem, seems like they're having to rebuild their data sets.

This weeks GB women's rankings... the top 10 continues its inexorable decline sadly, this time Katie B's -30 defeating any modest upward moves.

As it has been of late, the most positive action is in the 10 that follow. Mandy up another 31 to WR 356 and GB #12 ahead of Gabi.  Emma R is following up behind her in a new CH WR 460 and now ahead of Tara as GB #16. Tara herself still has a 15 place gain, whilst Lissey with +21 is back within the top 600 again. Further down Ola continues her gradual rise with a new CH 783. She will rise again next week.

Finally at the bottom, as mentioned last week, Chloe Compson drops off the rankings, and with the loophole now closed whereby she got the ranking without winning a match, I don't expect we'll be seeing her back.

For this week's rankings the star is Heather, with her magnificent run to the final in Tianjin. Unfortunately even her heroic performances are insufficient to make up for Katie B's ongoing loss of points. Ironically 6 others in the top 10 are showing slight rises too, but collectively they still fail to counterbalance the -73 recorded by Katie B and Fran together. So our top 10 average continues to slump.

Next week will be touch and go, but thanks to Katie S's W25 win last week, for the first time in many weeks, the top 10 average may not slide further, aided also by a small rise for Sam. If Harriet can win a few matches in China this week that will seal it. Katie B will fall out of the top 10 temporarily at least however, with her place being taken by Katy D. However Mandy will also have a chance to rise back into the top 10 soon, as well as Katie B herself if she is able to return to the court successfully once her PR kicks in by the end of this month.

This week, Maia sees her CH rise to 250, but that will be it for the near future. She will fall back next week, and since she is still out injured, it's unlikely she will get back to this position soon. It means next week it is Katie S who will take over as GB #4.

Lower down, it's Ola Pitak who has the largest rise with her incremental gains in Sharm, rising to another CH which she will improve on again next week. Beth, Lissey and Kasia Pitak all have -20+ falls, though Lissey will regain her points next week.

This week was still a negative week for our top 10 but only by -3 thanks to Katie S's W25 win the week before. Katie is up to WR 230 and GB #4 again, replacing Maia's temporary tenure there. Sam is up two to GB #6 and will also go above Maia next week. At the lower end of the top 10, Katie B now drops out as we still await her return. Katy D replaces her but that's not good news for our top 10 as Katy is not playing either at the moment.

The biggest climb of the week was by EWS +58 through her relatively easy 19 pts in the W100 in Suzhou. Lissey is up 22 and back into the top 600 at 587 but she is still considerably better than this.

Modest CHs were achieved by Alice G and Ola.

Thanks for these Michael. One thing I wondered might enhance it even more - and it is great as it is - is seeing the relative ranking falls/rises in relative terms to their previous ranking. Eg Katie Swan rising 31 places from 261 is a circa 12% rise, whereas EWS rising 58 from 535 is roughly 10%. I always find it a good way of seeing which person had the best week compared to their ranking position. Someone rising from 2 to 1 clearly is better than 10 to 9 or 100 to 99 etc.

Just a thought - but either way I always find it an interesting and informative read - oh and well laid out. How do you get your excel table to stay formatted!?

Thanks Jon for the feedback, useful and interesting as always. In fact the point you made was not the one I was originally thinking you were going to do when I started to read it.... which was it that it would be useful to know how players were doing relative to their ranking at the start of the year. That's something I have been thinking about, since I often find myself especially around this time, when I really can't remember where they were at the start of the year, that I often find myself going back to check.

I'm not going to do anything now, but for next year will think about possibly adding one or two extra columns so that whatever stats they are, are calculated from the beginning of the year. If anyone else has any ideas, they're welcome!

On the excel table formatting, it's just a screenshot of my table Jon. Someone like the a told me how to insert it properly a while back.

Yes, I think some comparison with the start of the year would be good such as listing the start of year ranking and/or the rises and falls from the start.

Thanks from me too. Unfortunately, and particularly into next year, Steven's ranking section figures get steadier more out of date.

As things stand, personally I am particularly going to miss his 2 pages with GB player by player chronological lists of all their ranking points from the previous year wirh fall-off dates. Having the 2018 lists hugely helps with updating and projecting GB rankings lists.

Yes I agree with you on that Indy. For me that's the real advantage of using OER, is that at least they do provide most of that information, so it is possible to calculate these if one wishes.

And yes, the additional data I was thinking would be along those lines - the start of year ranking can be indicated and the rise and fall from there..

Sam for example has risen 307 places this year from 568 to LR 261... on 1st Jan, she was only GB #19, one ahead of Ella Taylor (who seems to have stopped playing now). It's some second half of ear she's had, and it would be good to show this too, it was one of the elements of Steven's original top 25 tables I really liked.

Yes, this is a very interesting and useful table Peter. Can you insert it as well?

It shows Jo as the biggest percentage riser, followed by Mandy and Sam... with Katie B (not surprisingly) the biggest percentage decliner, followed by Gabi (very disappointingly) and Naomi.

How do I do that? It was hard to find any way of showing a table on this system. The only way I found was to take the Excel file, save it as a pdf, then move it to photoshop and output it as a jpeg.

The way I do it Peter is to take a screenshot of the part of the excel file I want, then I attach the screenshot as an image, and once attached it gives you the option to insert or remove.

I am a bit stuck at present. I have Office 2011 working on an old computer with an old operating system but it won't do screen shots. I have a newer computer with an operating system that will do screen shots but office 2011 doesn't work on it. I have a new version of office on order that should sort it in a few days.
