Heather needed another win. With the increased qualifying draw 101 is the cut-off in the entry list with 3 entered on SR. Even if none had used protected rankings she would have missed out.

Needs to see about withdrawals to avoid a wildcard being needed.

On 15th April Jo was 65th in the race to Singapore with +298 points  after 6 tournaments. By 20th May after 9 tournaments she had zoomed up to 13th with +1128 points.

Roland-Garros is starting today, so this coming week's rankings are already out. The main change for the GB women is the welcome return of Mandy Carreras at WR 604 and GB #21. It's good to see her back again, it's taken a while

Only other GB +10 moves are:
Lissey +11 to 463
Freya +18 to 527
Emily App +10 to 711 (Emily has been getting 1 pointers simply for being in W25 MDs).

Next ranking is two weeks time at the end of RG, and by then we will have more upwards movers, for a start just from this last week's results. But even Surbiton results will feature in the next ranking, just to show how much the season is moving on now!

Just seen the early ranking predictions for 10/6 end of the French Open. Nice climbs to CHs for Jodie and Maia, but a dreadful fall of 60 places by Gabi to LR 361. I really hope she get well and back on court again soon with some renewed mojo too. So far she is still in the Manchester 100k alt list, having withdrawn for Surbiton, whether she stays in is another question entirely. But hope she doesn't miss the whole grass court season as otherwise what's left of her ranking really will be decimated.

Here are the post French Open tennis rankings. As you can see some good moves this week amongst our top ten players led by Jodie and Maia, but also with good bumps for Katy D, Naiktha, Katie S, and of course Jo, who is back in the top 20. However they are countered by the big fall off for Gabi, who we will hope to see looking fully fit again in Manchester this week (rain permitting) and Harriet, also due to play again. In this group, Naiktha, Jodie and Maia all have CHs.

Further down Sam also has a big move back into the top 500, and Naomi at least reverses her recent decline. Next week Fran's points from her W25 win yesterday will move her to a CH too.

Some very healthy moves in this week's ranking between GB #9 and 13. Maia (and Jodie) have new CHs, and good to see Gabi finally with an upward move, albeit off the back of only one win. But the huge moves are just outside the top 10, with Sam's wonderful week, and Fran's sudden surge up the rankings, with a new CH this week, and another will follow next week, together with her likely entry into the top 300 and the GB #10 position.

Sam has risen from GB #20 to #12 in just two weeks

Mandy is another player who will rise about 85 places next week, and she is also down to play in Portugal this week.

Let's hope 1 or 2 more players also secure a few wins this week back in the UK.

New CHs this week for Naiktha and for Fran especially, who breaks into the top 300 after her second W25 win in a row, and becomes GB #10. Mandy also makes a significant move upwards, and with another 6 pts to add next week will be on the cusp of the top 500 again.

For the top 10, there is only a slight +4 upward move, with Harriet, Jodie and Katy D all with >-10 falls.

For the coming week the women's ranking news is inauspicious to say the least - we are currently looking at a -50 aggregate for the top 10 with sizeable falls for Harriet, Katie B and Katy D. With Jo being the only top 10 player still in competition, the aggregate fall is likely to exceed this before the week is out.

Katie S has to win a Wimbledon main draw match or she will also drop about 50 places and fall outside the top 250, although technically that won't be official for a couple of weeks, but it has been a very underwhelming few weeks for pretty much all of that top 11*. Ironically, the only one in that group that you could say has had a good few weeks, hasn't even stepped foot on grass yet. If Konta can add a couple more wins this week, then her pre-Wimbledon lead up on grass will have been decent, but a lot of missed opportunities elsewhere.

Hopefully we can get a few wins either from the 8 in qualifying or 4 in the main draw, as if not, it's going to look worse with Gabi and Katy (and Naomi) potentially dropping the 10 points they made just for turning up at SW19 last year (or a net of -8), and that is quite a significant amount when you're in and around 300, as it's similar to reaching a W25 QF.

Edit - *Obviously injuries didn't help 2 or 3 of those, but that just makes it even more unfortunate when you have a very small period of the year, to really push on like Katie B and Harriet in particularly did last year, yet nobody has really taken advantage of that window this year (thus far anyway).

^^ it's harder to push on after time out/stop start year when you are playing the larger tournaments and facing good, strong players off the bat. I dare say some (all?) of them would be been better off at Ilkley rather than the Brum/Eastbourne combo.

Yes, it's all very well for someone like Harriet to know that she can be competitive against top 100 players, but with her ranking plummeting towards the 200 mark it's going to take her months of rebuilding to regain the opportunity to play against these players. Ilkley sounds like it was a great tournament, but from a GB perspective I lost interest in it after about Monday. There's something wrong there. The LTA has also encouraged players to be attracted by the bright lights rather than the need to put together a series of grass court wins.

A lot of them were. Gabi played Manchester and Ilkley, 1 win, 2 defeats. Katie S played Ilkley, one good win, one defeat. Naiktha and Maia 1st round of Surbiton, could just about include Jodie in that as well, as she had 4 chances to close out her Surbiton match.

Katie B was ranked 156 last year heading into WTA Nottingham, won 2 matches to reach the QFs. Then you just need look at our Grand Slam counterparts this year. Chloe Paquet, 25 next month, ranked 223 heading into WTA Strasbourg, beats Kenin (34) and Gavrilova (63) on her way to the semi final and is then ranked 166 - that's taking an opportunity. The much maligned Hesse beat circa top 50 player Yafan Wang, Ferro just inside the top 100 got a top 20 scalp by beating Wang Qiang.

Kimberley Birrell, 283 heading into the Aussie summer, beats #10 Kasatkina at Brisbane, beats #43 Mladenovic in Sydney, beats #29 Vekic on her way to the Aussie Open 3rd round to knock 130 places off her ranking - that's taken advantage of opportunities most wouldn't get, and making the most of your wildcards. Tough draws for a lot of them obviously, but when you have the crowd support and in a lot of cases, a surface that suits you better, then you have to be doing more IMO. You just need look at Jubb on the men's side and the impact he has made - there's not one younger women who's even made half the impact he has.

Zhang had lost 7 of her 8 matches heading into this and Katie was just 11/8 at the bookies, chances like that don't happen everyday. Harriet did have tough draws and did generally compete well (but scalps can happen as shown), and you generally aren't going to get much change from Garcia, but two losing in under an hour isn't great, especially when another circa 200 player at the time in Ruse had a set and 5-5 against her in the following round, on the same indoor surface. The likes of Zhang, Smikova, Flink, Brengle, Minnen etc. Cornet even, are all higher ranked, but there were certainly opportunities there to get wins and push on in the draw and in the rankings.

I don't know how far some of these players can go, Naiktha and Maia probably not too far, in terms of pushing the top 100-150, and Katy is a bit older than the rest, but a lot of people on here (perhaps optimistically) had Harriet and Katie S in their top 100, or just outside, in their start of year predictions, so when you see Harriet 170/180, 60 places off her career high and 23 next month (by no means young in tennis terms), or Katie potentially 90 places lower than her CH at 250 (if she loses in Wimbledon R1), then it's not too encouraging, especially when you see so many 16-19 year old's ranked above them, and not just those obvious candidates either, who have unrealistic talent and potential. There's Gabi as well, 15 months ago, people were saying she should be playing Nara in Fed Cup, destined for the top 100 etc. and here she is outside the top 300. Most of these have been hampered by illness and injury this year (as you mentioned with the stop/start) and who knows, any other time of the year, they might have delayed competing a couple of weeks, but pretty much everyone has gained less points than last year, a year older, and that has a knock on effect for the future tournaments they enter.

I've written far more than I was wanting, but it's just a bit frustrating. I'm a huge women's tennis fan in general and watch so much of the WTA tour (borderline too much) and would love nothing more than to see 4 or 5 Brits in or just outside the top 100, like Belarus, Slovakia, Ukraine etc. currently have, and while that may go well against history and tradition here, it's a real shame to see the landscape as it currently is and, those who might have had (or still might have) top 100 potential adding 50, 100 or even 200 places on to their career highs is a bit grim. Still a generally good young group to follow on the ITF scene, but when these rare opportunities come and go, and they are all older, going backwards in many cases, the window narrows to get on to the big stage, where they are more relevant in the sporting world.

Would have another lower tiered tournament running this week (one that wasn't like the v strange Southsea) be something positive?
