Percentage improvements in rankings since 24/12/2018.
Nine players have dropped out of the rankings since December and have been given the nominal ranking of 5000 just to show who we have lost. I will probably remove them in later postings.
I like Emily Arbs significant upwards move without playing a match! Jodie is the largest 'real' gainer so far. For many though, especially with the changes brought about by the new double tiered circuits it's still all in transition.
I'm posting this week's women's rankings as they provide a more interesting read than they have for a while. First of all we are back up to 25 WTA ranked players, welcome Vic Allen, and following Naiktha Bain's return nationality switch.
Second, thanks to Naiktha's arrival and Jodie's rise of 31 places ahead of Maia and back into the GB top 10, our top ten average is now also back to marginally under 200 (total points 1996). In the coming week Jodie should also make the top 300 for the first time.
Then for the first time in a while too, we also have some upward movement amongst our lower WTA ranked players. Eden moves up 36 places to a new CH and becomes GB #12, albeit still 115 places behind Maia. Behind her Emma also rises to a CH, just short of the top 500, whilst so does Victoria with her new ranking. Eden did play in Obidos, but in general shows you what happens when occasionally the LTA can find a way to hold a still relatively small local tournament. There will be more moves next week, though not so pronounced, with Harriet being the major GB points winner. Still, it's been a while since we've had a chart with more green than red!
Yes, small steps in the right direction and a very welcome addition in Naiktha.
With Fed Cup this weekend, we only really have Naiktha in point scoring action (let's hope Pula isn't as affected this week), so by the time the rest of the contingent are back in action, it'll be almost May, so the 'Race' rankings are at a stage now where you can take much more from them and assess who are the most in form and playing well above their current ranking and who are well below and likely to have a lot of points to defend and work to do in the coming months, pretty much just to stand still:
Laura is now on 9 points so would move above Beth, but OER haven't accounted for that yet, they have her 9 points on show, but don't have her new race ranking. Tournaments played don't take into account failed non point scoring qualifying attempts as the likes of Tara would have far more tournaments than just the 4. The race is effective from after the WTA Finals / Zhuhai, so tournaments in November and December last year count.
A bit of a mixed bag there with some doing a lot better and some doing far worse. Raducanu and Allen positively stand out with both being in the top 500 and only having played 3 point scoring event apiece. Bains, Burrage and Maia are all around 100 places above their current ranking, so they'll have ample opportunity to push their current rankings (which are largely CHs) a lot further on - Naiktha and Jodie have absolutely nothing to defend until the grass season.
It still can change quickly though as Eden and Tara's situation both look a lot healthier after their surprise 25k semi final runs, so let's hope there's a few more of those out of the blue successes, as well as our more established players to pretty much get their season going.
Here's this week's GB women's rankings. CHs for Naiktha and Jodie, with the latter climbing into the top 300 for the first time, and up two to GB #8.
This is going to be Naomi's last week in the top 10, to be replaced by Maia next week. Whether she will return again seems increasingly unlikely, but she is still entering into some tournaments using her old ranking and so will have a few more gos to regain some of the points she is now losing.
Further down, Victoria Allen moves up another 50 places into the 670s, and Tara moves up 38 to go ahead of Fran, who continues to stall this early part of the year. Laura also moves up, but she still has who two counters due to come off in early May and needs one more replacement still to retain/ regain her ranking.
Fantastic to see Jodie at a career high and in to the 300's. She was outside the top 500 in August, so it just shows what great form she has been in with her numerous top 200 wins and a couple of 25k finals - hopefully that first (relatively) big title isn't too far away. Back in action next week after a couple of well earned weeks off and should be a high seed in Spain 60k quals where there is a fairly large Brit contingent.
Am posting this week's tennis rankings since it's mix of the good, not so good and the bizarre makes for some interesting viewing.
The good - wonderful results and leaps back up the ranking from Katy D, who moves back up 63 places and 3 places in the GB order, Jodie, with another new CH, Alicia from last week's performance, also with a CH, and Jo of course, even if her rankings climb from her losing final in Rabat is less spectacular. There are also modest climbs and CHs for Naiktha and Eden.
Then the not so good - further drops for Gabi, Naomi, Beth and Laura, the latter who is about to lose her ranking completely next week. Harriet also drops 10 places and needs too to be back competing when she can. Still thanks to Katy D and Jodie, our top 10 average will be back comfortably under 200 this week, but still requires the 6 fallers in this week's top 10 to show an upside for us to safely climb away from that mark.
Finally the bizarre, and well also the not so good. This week our WTA ranked players climbs to 26, but for the first time ever, there is no pleasure in that, since Chloe Compson, having seemingly forked out for a series of Italian W25 WCs has now gained the 3 counters necessary but has come nowhere near winning even a set of tennis. It's a failure of the system that she is there ahead of many much more deserving players. She is but 17 and could still improve of course, but whether she will even use her ranking we will see, as her game at present is a long way from what's required to be competitive. The common practice highlighted in the discussion of Chloe (see her individual section) of tournament organisers selling q and MD WCs to help with fund raising, is another of the shabbier sides of the game sadly. And no surprise the link to betting practices.
Just to note, in advance of the proper acceptance lists which are still being finalised - Laura Robson is entered for five W25 events for w/c 20th May, and is certainly into qualifying in three of them, and close in the other two. Thati s before the automatic withdrawals take place. SO hopefully she'll be out there playing somewhere.
Apart from Heather, Lissey and Sam the GB women's rankings for this week are filled with an awful lot of red. Next week's picture is even more ugly so far, with Naomi continuing to fall and potentially out of the top 400 as she has 29 pts coming off for reaching the SF in Karume last year. Katie S also will fall out of the top 200, and Katie D falls +10 as well. Problem with our top 10 is that at least half of them - Katie B, Harriet, Katie S, Gabi, Maia - are just not very active at the moment for various reasons. If it was not for Naiktha's switch to GB, our average would be well over 200 now and continuing to rise. The gap between Maia and Naomi could rise to nearly 100 places next week, and I suspect no-one is going to look like bridging it until Emma is able to play a bit more regularly, with luck during the grass season.
