I have to disagree with you. James Ward has beaten Gabashvilli, Kamke (x2), Henri-Mathieu, Troicki and Querrey on hard courts this year.

If he plays the way he did against Troicki and Anderson (1st set), James will qualify.

Even though he lost to Kevin Anderson in the end, his first set was incredible.

Believe.

You're probably right, more a comment on the strength of the draw in general, particularly when compared to the recent tournaments in Asia. That said, Coric is one of the names you would certainly want to avoid in your section.

Maybe we shouldn't have looked so far ahead. Veic has taken the 1st set 7-5. Also nice to know that I have a friend apparently :)

Not a huge surprise to see James struggling. I have never understood why but his record indoors is very poor. At the moment he only has two scores from indoor tournaments.

12 points from Kuala Lumpur qualifying this year where he beat an unranked played and a player ranked 831
15 points from the Toyota challenger last year where he beat players ranked 254 and 465

3 breaks against isn't good half way through second set.

James keeps dropping serve, but took the second set 6-4

That was hard won, but James had to break to win having been a double break up.

That's a relief - I came back to check the score and it had vanished from livescores but was not showing on completed matches. I knew I'd get the answer here

I count that as a very good win.

Veic was top 120 and, in the last few months, has beaten about five top 150 players. Good one, james . . .

That's a great start to what I think will be a successful qualification for James. It's tough to see Coric in his side but as FriendofLouieG said, he's had a lot of good wins against good players this year.
