Farris should be in the main draw. Looks like Harry probably made it in too . . .

 

QR1:  Enrique Vidal  v  (q10) Alexandre Massa (FRA) WR 1270 (WR 1206 in 2012)

QR1:  (q8) Joe Salisbury  WR 1214  v  Shun* (Sean) David (FRA) UNR

 

Joe's opponent is in the ITF records as Shun but he's in the French system as Sean (which makes a bit more sense - maybe tried to put 'Shaun' in the ITF and mis-spelled it - although that doesn't really make sense either as Shaun is not the same as Sean (in terms of spelling) and surely he'd know whether he was Sean or Shaun ???)

Anyway, net net, Sean is not a scary opponent (age 18, a lot of mediocre wins but nothing of any real note) - Joe should win easily enough.

Massa, age 21, is a far stronger player (about 50 wins, 25 losses this year, and quite a lot of good wins too) - tough for Vidal.

Coup - Have you seen Farris play? What sort of potential do you think he's got? I heard somewhere that he has moved to a club in France, if I am correct. I have never seen him live and just wondered if you had any thoughts...

Farris has been at college in US for last few years and I don't think he has played in the UK during the period.

Howdie, all rounder, and welcome.

I'm afraid I've never seen Farris play - I believe that he's been based pretty much completely in the US for the last 3 years or so (while at college) and so I doubt anyone over here has seen him (unless as a junior maybe). I've never even seen a dodgy stream of him playing.

I've looked him up on the French domestic site but no sign - which might mean he's not joined a French club, or that his application isn't processed yet, or that he has joined but there's a spelling thing with his name (the site doesn't list the names, you have to type it in correctly to find it, and I've tried a few variants but got nothing). I can't remember anyone here saying he HAD a joined a French club - it might have been me speculating that he might well have, hence playing in France for a couple of weeks. But that was just idle speculation . . However, if he's only taking a semester off, it's only make sense if he joined one of the elite top clubs that are in Div 1 of the league (very small league), as they play in November/December, whereas practically all of the GB players belong to Div 2- 4 clubs (far more of them) which play in April/May, which would be too late for Farris, if he was back in the US then.

On the College tennis forum in the US (pretty knowledgeable, it seems to me, but then I'm not, so maybe I wouldn't know) someone described Farris as 'silky smooth' which I thought was a nice phrase and bodes well. He's definitely left-handed. My own belief is that any good college player can play at WR 800 or so without too much trouble. After that, it's difficult to predict without knowing them better.

Sorry not to be of any more help - maybe someone else here knows more ? Or will do so if he plays in the UK over the next few months ?

No thank you for your information. I've just been impressed by his progress on the website recently and wondered if he could be someone who has a good chance of progressing through the ranks quickly.

Yes, the French club was probably speculation. It was probably on a forum or a post somewhere and I picked up on it.

Hope he continues in the same form here!

Well, that was closer than I'd expected but all well in the end:

Joe's normal doubles partner, David O'Hare, and potential next round opponent. has retired from his match after having lost the first set 5-7

Don't know if Joe will be able to find another doubles partner, if david is out properly - should be a fair number of French guys hanging around, if he wants to.


FQR: (q8) Joe Salisbury WR 1214 v (wc) Alexandre Martinatto (FRA) UNR age 36


Martinatto (the guy who 'beat' O'Hare) won the National Championships, over 35, a couple of months ago. Seems to play a lot, as you'd imagine. Has a domestic ranking of -4/6.

The doubles draw is out, with Joe still playing with Daivd O'Hare (who presumably isn't too injured then) and Harry M playing with Grinberg who's just qualified got the MD

Well, the guys have got pretty reasonable first round draws:

R1: (5) Farris Gosea WR 609 v (wc) Mandresy Rakotomalala (FRA) UNR age 17 (junior ITF ranking 74)

R1: Harry Meehan WR 995 v (wc) Alexandre Muller (FRA) WR 1359 (CH 1246 in March) age 17 (junior high of ITF 64)

R1: (q) Joe Salisbury WR 1141 v Jonathan Kanar (FRA) WR 869


Muller is a good prospect in French junior tennis - at one of the elite centres (INSEP, I think) - got to the quarter-finals of the National championships in August. Probably the hardest draw of the three.

Kanar is plugging away but hasn't got a lot to show for his efforts - has the same ranking though as Muller. Lost to Luke B in Doha.

Mandresy (called 'Make') is more interesting, also got to the quarters of the U18 nationals although a year younger than Muller (and one ranking level lower). Was national champion 15/16 years. Spent three years at the elite centre - then went back to to his home league. Has a top level sister too (about 12 or 13. I think). It's a family affair, and a family of very modest means. They've set up an association to try and raise money, sell Madagascar artifacts to raise money, do all they can but it's tricky.
