Neil Pauffley has won all 3 of his Futures singles titles on carpet - and 2 of them were won here the last two years, unseeded in 2012 and seeded 2 in 2013.
Most Futures are glad to be able to report their former winners going onto bigger and better things, but not this one ... the preview on the Hambach site at http://www.dittelbrunn-open.com/Daten/Vorschau_DOpen.php (written before entries closed) says:
"Die spannendste Frage wird sein, ob der zweifache Sieger Neil Pauffley das Triple anstrebt und erneut in Hambach meldet. Die Zeichen stehen gut, da sein aktuelles Ranking mit Position 566 keine Chance bietet, bei einem höherwertigen Turnier aufzuschlagen. Auch in seiner Erfolgshistorie spielt Hambach mit zwei von drei Titeln eine maßgebliche Rolle. Es lohnt sich also, die Punkte zu verteidigen." ... or in other words ...
The biggest question is whether two-time winner Neil Pauffley will go for the triple and enter Hambach again. The signs are good, because his current ranking of 566 gives him no chance of going for a bigger tournament. Also, Hambach plays a signficant part in his roll of honour, with two of his three titles. Therefore, it is worth defending the points.

Interesting, then, that it's being played on clay according to the ATP, but carpet according to the ITF!

Disappointed Neil isn't seeded here...much stronger than it was last year. Requested a Wednesday start in the hope his hamstring has another day of rest.
Neil lost 7-5 in the 3rd. Managed to get a live stream to watch it. Neil had a couple of match points at 5-4, but faced an ace and then a shockingly bad forehand from him. Very disappointed - hoping this tournament might have helped to boost his confidence again.
I feel a bit sorry for Neil. I seen him play quite a few times. When he's good he is very very good, but the last few times I've seen him, he's been very up and down and cannot get any consistency. There is obviously a lack of confidence at the moment and I'm firmly of the belief that most sports winning is 50% and 50% between the ears.
I completely agree with you - Neil is so calm and level headed that he doesn't believe that's what it is. I keep telling him that he knows how to play, it's the winning he just can't seem to get right.

I must have watched Neil play at least a dozen times over the past couple of years. My first impression is that he is an absolute superb lad, I have never seen a single incidence of even remotely poor behaviour on court and I have never heard anybody utter a bad word about him. My second impression is that he has a really a nice game and that had he been around when carpet and fast hard courts were more common he would have had a much better career. My third impression is that he doesn't really believe that he will ever be better than a decent futures player.
