Week 39 - ATP World Tour 250 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Hard) - doubles

Potentially the easiest 6 points ever for James? ... and an unranked Brit is in the qualifying draw too!

QR1: Joe Cooper UNR v Stefan Merunka (CRO) WR 1536 (= CH)

QR2: (q1) James Ward WR 121 v Koay Hao Sheng (MAS) UNR (16yo junior WR 1155)
QR2: Cooper or Merunka v (q2) Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (IND) WR 315 (CH 293 last month)

Easiest 12 points ever I think Steven! All count I guess!

I can't find this draw anywhere. Does anybody know the full path that James is projected in qualies? Cheers!

It's on the ATP live web app. If he wins his QR2 match, he would play 7th Q seed Prasanth WR 829 (CH 501 in 2013) or John Peers in final qualifying, so yes, Jaffa is probably right.

With players ranked outside the top 800 seeded to get 6 points, it's a pity there aren't more Brits here!

Guess this explains why james didn't hang around in Turkey :)

In the doubles:

R1:  Frank Moser & Alexander Satschko (GER/GER) CR 218 (130+88) vs (3) Dom Inglot & Florin Mergea (ROU) CR 67 ((38+29)

Pity about Dom's break-up with TCH, but if he's playing with Florin for the rest of the season, at least they'll have a chance to adjust to one another's game.

R1:  (WC) Nick Kyrgios & Syed Mohd Agil Syed Naghib (what a mouthful!) (AUS/MAS) UNR vs (2) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 63 (31+32)

Both pairs are in the same half of the draw.

Indeed it does!  I also thought it strange that he travel to Asia to play just a single event.  However, he would have made the cut without any trouble at all if he had entered a bit earlier....Or did he decide to go via qualies anyway?

Qualifying spots are v.  Go Soeda, Jarko Nieminen or another qualifier.   All 2nd round matches are very tough.

Good luck!

I suspect James is playing a clever game to pick up easy ranking points and push for the top 100.
Not entering and then picking an ATP tour event with the weakest field, means a great chance of qualifying and winning the odd round as well.

It's been said before but I've always thought that james is one of the savvier players when it comes to choosing his schedule, and good on him, it's important.

Wonder if he gets the bonus top-up now . .

I guess we won't ask for a comment from the guys who win four qualifying rounds at US futures against apparently much better players than that for a total 0 points !

But all the best to James.

Peers is the third doubles specialist I've seen this week, giving singles a go, who's lost in three sets - which sort of (VERY small sample) backs up the theory that the doubles players have the tennis but they sure don't have the fitness/endurance.
