RE: Week 30 - ITF ($10K) - Tallinn, Estonia Clay

I've not seen Eleanor this week, but from the last stream, I would suggest clay is not her preferred surface and inhibits her big serve and ground shots.

If the serve is falling down, I wander if she has a recurrence of the arm injury. Does she have any strapping on that arm this week?

Yes, all up the serving arm. Looks like the elbow is the problem.

I think the surface is fine, but there's clearly something ailing her, so my best guess is she hasn't recovered 100% from the arm injury. I don't think this match is on the livestream.

Funny, I thought yesterday that she looked like a real clay-courter - her forehand, in particular, looks like a classic clay court shot - but maybe she plays a different style forehand on a hard court????

But she definitely was wearing a full arm sleeve (like Raonic always wears).

Might just be precautionary/comfort, like Raonic. . . But good chance there's a slight problem . . .

However, we can't really say that Eleanor 'should' be winning these matches easily. She's only had a couple of months at this level, the paint's hardly had time to dry, let alone consolidate.

Well she is fighting back - having gone 3-0 down it is back to 3-3

Eleanor loses, 6-3 in the third.

Ignoring possible injury concerns, one should note that Laura is probably no slouch, as Gulbis' sister, and Gulbis himself said last year she's a very good player but a little small still and that's what was holding her back.
And she has/had Flavia Penetta's coach and (presumably) pretty much unlimited training funds (she's a half sister, but via the father who is the wealthy one).

I personally feel Eli is a challenger level calibre player if she was fully fit, she's that good, so I'm sticking to my assertion that she's not 100% fit.

As for Gulbe she may well be an improving player, but still shouldn't be able to get close to beating Eli if Eli is firing on all cylinders.

Pity. Looks a real fall off in performance and results over the last couple of weeks.

Simply losing these matches and indeed performing less well should not be any particular worry. Eleanor has shown enough often enough already this year to have reaffirmed her great potential.

But possible injury issues with her are a source of concern.
