RE: Week 30 - Challenger ($125,000) - Astana II, Kazakhstan (Hard)

This is the most ridiculous match I've watched in years.

Dave got bagel led in the breaker.

We shouldn't be too heavy on Dave there, I only saw the last 5 games but I don't think either player actually hit a winner.

Absolute farce, worried for Kyle as well

Sadly, Dave gets "bagelled" in the breaker and loses 7-6(0) in the 3rd

Agreed. On paper I would make Kyle strong favourite to win today but these conditions are such a leveler, anything could happen.

Popko takes the third set breaker to love.  DR will be disappointed with his play in the breaker, but conditions were horrid.

I watched the final set in its entirety.  Dave made too many errors when he was moving forward.  He never really went after the ball, I think he felt the conditions just too difficult. But when faced with no choice because of a very short ball, he didn't look at all good off either wing.  Overall a close match until the tiebreak.  Its a shame for DR, there are decent points and prize money to be had here...

Shame for Dave but he doesn't have a great game for windy conditions - way too high on his toes, all a bit unbalanced, lots of sliced backhand.

Kyle has a heavier, flatter shot, more legs - should be easier.

Kyle has just served out the 1st set (despite 2 DFs).  He is hitting the ball much harder than Dave Rice and the overall standard seems significantly better.  Conditions still horrid and Kyle is sometimes forced into a sliced forehand when the ball is stopped by a gust of wind.

It doesn't make great viewing, hopefully the wind will subside tomorrow

Kyle is now a double break up in the 2nd set as well and will serve at *4-1

Kyle wins 3&2. Given the conditions, that was pretty comprehensive.

L32: Kyle Edmund WR 267 beat (Q) Temur Ismailov (UZB) WR 538 6-3 6-2
L32: Dave Rice WR 329 lost to (WC) Dmitry Popko (KAZ) WR 1168 6-3 2-6 7-6(0)

Oli's conquerer in FQR withdrew through injury in his 1st round match, just to rub salt into the wound.

However, Kyle's win will see him take out his former Coach Beechy's CH ranking of 264 (which has been an aim of his for quite a while) and will see him on the verge of the top 250. A win in the next round would obviously seal that.

Well done, Kyle.

The other guy played quite well and Kyle got pretty frustrated at times (understandably) but he managed to hold it together well and was a comfortable winner.

Happy for Kyle getting his win and increasing is CH once again. Gutted for Dave but I guess he doesn't have the game for that type of weather. Everyone knows how that weather can reduce ranking gaps hugely, too.

And with Kyle's opponent now known, here is a full round up.

L32: Kyle Edmund WR 267 beat (Q) Temur Ismailov (UZB) WR 538 6-3 6-2
L32: Dave Rice WR 329 lost to (WC) Dmitry Popko (KAZ) WR 1168 6-3 2-6 7-6(0)

L16: Kyle Edmund WR 267 v (7) Thomas Fabbiano (ITA) WR 218 (CH 166 last month)

Fabbiano has had a decent year in Challengers, reaching a handful of Q's and an S, but apart from Le Gosier back in March, hasn't beaten a player who is clearly better than Kyle, when he beat Benjamin Becker. I expect Fabbiano to come through, because he has had a good CH not too long ago and seems relatively consistent. But Kyle has a great chance here to get some extra points and have a go against almost certainly Blaz Kavcic.

Edit: He ain't no Spaniard, and I ain't one either.
