Must be my fault. Switched on at *0-3 in the 2nd and he has now won his first game. I should have switched on earlier.

1-3*

Well I guess the 2nd set was an improvement and Rich had a break point to get back on serve*4-5 at one point, but missed a forehand. Sarmiento won 6-0 6-3

Is Sarmiento a hidden, underranked treasure or was Gabb just disappointing?

Sarmiento is one of the best players at university: actually even better than I'd thought. I knew I'd seen the name, but looking him up, he's 7th in the country for singles and 4th for doubles. Comes from University of Southern California - same programme as Steve Johnson, Robert Farah, etc. Don't know what it's like as a university, but as a tennis place, it's clearly not at all bad.

Not a nice match to back up the Kozlov victory, but I was surprised he won that one so not all bad I suppose.

Main draw with updated rankings (some significant changes since last week's list) and H2H details:

L32: (4) Dan Evans WR 147 v Vincent Millot (FRA) WR 188 (CH 147 in 2011)
L32: (5) James Ward WR 150 v (WC) Jared Donaldson (USA) WR 333 (= CH)
L32: Dan Cox WR 207 v (3) Yuichi Sugita (JPN) WR 132 (CH 116 in 2012)
L32: Dan Smethurst WR 239 v (WC) Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS) WR 243 (= CH)

Evo v Millot H2H: 0-1 - Millot won 6 & 4 in Feucherolles back in 2009
Cox v Sugita H2H: 0-2 - Sugita won 3 & 2 in juniors in Osaka in 2006 and 6 & 1 in Rimouski this year

James is of course the defending champion.

Well done, James - knew you would !

Now for the other three . . .

NB Saw all the first set of Gabb - thought the score was a little harsh really - Gabb wasn't thrashed by a long way - but Sarmiento was remarkably solid - looked like a Spanish clay courter
