Week 20 - Romania F1 ($10,000) - Galati (Clay)

Another of a mass of weak clay court Futures next week. Jack Carpenter is likely to be seeded in the main draw (only two players in the top 750 entered, though they are both top 400) and it looks like Tom Allen has made it in too.

QR2: Nikki Roenn UNR v William Emanuel Birau (ROU) UNR

But watch out for a certain Lucas Pouille ranked 189 who is playing qualies.

Tom has drawn the shortest of short straws here - no idea why Frenchman in the top 200 decided it would be a good idea to play Futures qualies in Romania as a late entrant!

L32: Tom Allen WR 1498 v (1/Q) Lucas Pouille (FRA) WR 187 (CH 173 in Mar)
L32: (7) Jack Carpenter WR 880 v Andrei Cociasu (ROU) WR 1944 (CH 1894 in Jan)

Apparently, according to the French tennis tweet guy, Lucas hasn't won a single match since February (haven't checked but I guess he's right), and is having a confidence crisis.

And with Roland Garros qualies coming up I guess he thought he could really do with a few clay court victories.

But I agree - feel sorry for Tom. Lucas shouldn't be here . . ..

I always thought that there was a cut-off ranking whereby you are not allowed to enter futures if your ranking is below this number and I'd always thought it was 200. Have I completely made this up or just got the figure wrong?!

Tom Allen playing, presumably, the highest ranked player he's ever played, lost the first set 6-1 but is 3-2 up in the second

There is a cut off and I think it is 150 for futures.

Are you sure, Paulisi and imoen? I've no idea so I'm not saying it's wrong but:

In the ITF 2014 rules, B1 page 2 says that it is open to all male players, based on merit and subject only to the condition set forth herein that minors under the age of 14 shall not be eligible.

There doesn't seem to be any rule about cut off, unless it's elsewhere in the guide.
