Good win - draw is weak this week, so i'm hoping both girls play to their seedings and pick up decent points. Tara needs some desperately as she is dropping down the rankings.
Yes. Tara has 20 points to come off before Wimbledon (points off minus replacements in reserve). And her lowest counters are 5, so a win or two won't make much difference.
Naomi only has 7 points off before Wimbledon which is obviously a nicer position. But with lowest counter of 8, she's got to go quite deep into the tournament to make a difference.
However, Tara is sitting pretty compared to Jade who has 41 (!) points to come off. Very precarious position, especially given recent form.
And the players who got 40 points for their first round Q win at Wimbl. are obviously particularly vulnerable given the points changes this year (now only 20). That's Jade again, and Naomi. ALthough there's also a lot of other women too so, relatively, it won't be just them of course.
Yes, SFs and beyond have become much more of a priority in the WTA's amended pounts scales ( i.e. now much moe like the ATP distributions and in my view the better for that ).
Monova has had some good wins (though at first glance, none as good as this ) but seems to be very inconsistent - Tara must have caught her on a very good day when she was having a very bad day herself, presumably. Half of the games were breaks of serve (6 for the Russian, 4 for Tara) and 12 of the 20 games went to deuce, suggesting it was all very close. Can't say I thought Tara would have much trouble with this one though, must be very frustrating.
