Naomi and Magda won their first round doubles match (which is already one better than they managed last week).

Naomi has also made an improved showing on last week in singles already, having won the first set quite comfortably,
Quickly went *3-0 up and the set proceeded on serve from there.
6-2

4 Aces, 0 DF, 2/3 on Break Points, and faced no BP herself

Another set so convincing would be most welcome.

And so it was...

A very comfortable victory for Ms. Broady, the second set going much the way of the first.

This hopefully means last week was just a blip, and the good form from the end of last year will be sustained and continued in to this year.

6-2 6-2

After a very long absence, I was going to do a full commentary on this match, but I think the real interest was only ever for WTA level matches. Maybe later in the week; hopefully Naomi will still be going then.

Set 1

So, Naomi begins against the lesser of the Sema sisters 'quite well'.
Receiving, she wins the first four points of the match for an early break
*1-0

After winning the first 7 points of the match, Naomi loses the next 3 - one a DF - to face deuce, but serves out to hold and consolidate the good start.
2-0*

(The live scores keep refreshing down and this matches score disappears each time)

More pressure for the Sema serve; 30-30* to deuce and an Adv BP for Naomi which is converted courtesy of a Japanese DF, for an excellent start at the first sit down
*3-0

It strikes me how unfriendly the 'new' ITF live scores are for summarising compared to the older version - there is not as much information or as clearly displayed, and the stats do not update in time with the points to which they relate.

Game 4: a routine hold to 15
4-0*

Game 5: Naomi still piling on the pressure with another BP at 30-40*, and shows no mercy.
3 BP 3 conversions; ovens warmed up, smell of bakery in the air...
*5-0

Game 6: Don't count your bagels before they're cooked, as Sema moves to *0-30, and then earns her first BP at *30-40. A big Broady Ace saves that and she closes out a very impressive first set indeed.
12 points lost. Bagel to go!

6-0

Set 2

Well, though it makes a less compelling match, another set for Naomi like the last would be most welcome.

Game 1: No letting up it seems as Naomi smoothly moves to 40-15* and converts her second of those BP to start the second set exactly as she did the first.
*1-0

Game 2: Backs up the break with a love service hold.
Still a long way to go to be sure though, but nice that Naomi is performing well so far after the surprise of last week.
2-0*

Game 3: Yurika has a Eureka! moment and figures out how to get on the board, holding to 30.
*2-1

Game 4: Broady recovers from *0-30 to 30-30 by reeling off 4 straight points, two of them aces, to hold.
3-1*

Game 5: Naomi has consistently gotten good starts in the Japanese service games getting to at least 30-15* or better virtually every time.
The same happens here, 30-15*, but Sema holds from there with 3 consecutive points, and showing more life now than thus far in the match.
*3-2

Game 6: A quickfire hold to love for Naomi.
4-2*

Game 7: Yurika-ka-ka holds to 15, and my Spidey sense is telling me that Naomi would be best advised to close this out before Sema plays herself in to any sort of form.
No reason so far to think that Naomi won't do just that.
*4-3

Game 8: Another solid hold, to 15, and including aces 6, 7 & 8.
Do or die for the Japanese.
5-3*

Game 9: 30-0* looking to close it out right here... but Sema not prepared to just give it away, back to 30-30*... a Match Point arrives... and there is no let up at all as Naomi seals a very impressive performance indeed.

Pleasingly ruthless

Result
L16: Naomi BROADY (GBR) WR232 defeated Yurika SEMA (JPN) [6] WR192 6-0 6-3

5/6 on BP, 8 Aces, 1 DF and only faced a single BP against her higher ranked opponent - a very satisfactory day indeed.

Well done Naomi! Onwards!
