A quick shout out for a non Brit favourite of mine as Alex de Minaur wins his first ATP title at just 19 years old. I wouldn't have even noticed him if a certain board member here hadn't asked me to keep an eye out for him at the Murcia futures a few years ago. I was highly impressed back then (even if he did beat my mate Billy that week) and it is no surprise to me the he is rapidly rising to the upper echelons of the game.

My report from that day in 2016, where I also saw a young Caspar Ruud in action.

Alex de Minaur - It was this Aussie that really impressed me. He turned 17 yesterday but could probably still pass as a 15 year old. And heaven help the tennis world when his physique catches up. His talent was much more instinctive and what impressed me most was his variation. He wasn't afraid to throw in the drop shot and was extremely comfortable coming to the net and volleying. He certainly looked the more "naturally gifted" of the two players. He comfortably beat the rather enigmatic and flamboyant French Nş2 seed, Maxim Hamou.

So thanks for the tip CD.

Glad to be of service, Bob

And the lad's not doing badly, is he?

Won his ATP title and now got a win in R1 at the Aussie Open.

Actually, when I saw him this summer I thought he was still rather too skinny and slight - but he played a cracking match to beat Taylor Fritz (just shows what brilliant matches you can get at challengers, and for nothing, half the time) showing that, as you so rightly identified, he has an amazing amount of talent. And he's a quasi-Spaniard, isn't he? One parent and lived/trained there for a lot of his childhood?

It's so nice to follow certain youngsters as they pursue their path.....

Yes he's doing pretty well, especially given that my comment "And heaven help the tennis world when his physique catches up." still holds true even now.  There is plenty more to come from him in the future.

I think he was based in my neck of the woods near Alicante.  Don't know if he is still based here or not.  I don't know this, but it wouldn't be surprising if he spent much of his time training at the Juan Carlos Ferrero academy, which is 30 mins out of Alicante.  That is where James Ward spent some time in his youth.

She didn't win but what a wonderful match from young Sofia Kenin of the US against Simona Halep.

Do you think so? She's 20 now, young, I agree, but not a junior. And I thought she showed a remarkable lack of guts to take the ball early - great cross court forehand but Halep always had the time on the ball, Kenin didn't step in - I know it's a risk but it was always hugely odds on that she'd be caught out not doing so.

I thought she was only just a year out of juniors and you are probably right CD about her court positioning.  However, I think what I liked was her energy, scampering, attitude and increasing fearlessness as the match went on, really going for her shots.

Maybe I was just feeling grumpy and churlish.... :(
Sorry, the O, you make a good point, I'll try and be a bit more generous and charitable :)

17 year old wild card Caty Mcnally has just taken the Midland 100k title without dropping a set on the way. This tournament tournament was a favourite with a number of our players.

Yeah, she was very impressive. That run included a few top 100 players. Yet another one to watch.

Dayana Yastremska winning her 2nd full WTA title at 18 and a half is not to be sniffed at either.

From Liam Broady:

"Well done Dayana Yastremska on another WTA title. Still dont forgive you for mistaking me for a coach in Ilkley and asking me to hit with you after I just finished my practise though "

Congratulations to Laslo Djere for winning his maiden title in Rio. This young lad has lost both parents to cancer - mum 7 years ago, dad just 2 months ago.
