There are a lot of players who have stopped early for one reason or another, and I think that most of them have a chance to return at some point, maybe years later, like Sevastova. I never thought Rebecca would return, ever.

Very, very pleased.

Rebecca is through to the SF this week too, and still hasn't lost a set since return.

And it continues: Rebecca wins consecutive titles from her first two events on return after a 5 year absence. Still not lost a set; only lost more than 4 games in a set twice, and never more than 5 games in a set.
Just a lovely story, which has Canadians joking - half-seriously - that she'll be Canadian number one by the end of the year

Interesting "goings on" at my local tournament in Murcia this week, although I haven't been down to watch.

Spanish player by the name of Carlos Alcaraz Garfia has gained his first ever ranking point. Considering he is just 14 years old, that is a feat in itself. But he did so by taking out the Nş2 seed Gaio (ITA) who is WR 292 (CH 146), winning in a 3rd set breaker.

Young Carlos has now gone on to reach the QF which he will play later today.

Rebecca's resurrection shows no signs of slowing down.
Over 5 years away, and now, three titles in a row from her first three events back.
She has rather disgraced herself this week, by losing her first set in the 18 matches she's played since returning - aganst the WR320 top seed. A blemish to the record: 18-0 matches, 'only' 36-1 in sets.
At time of writing, she's still down for a fourth week, so the quad-trick is on. I can't imagine many players in ITF history have played and won 4 consecutive weeks at any level?

Petra Kvitova is on a 13 match winning streak now, winning the Doha title (d. Muguruza) which is amazing when you consider that at this time last year nobody was sure if she would ever be able to play again.

I think the key thing here is - apart from the fatigue that even a player regularly playing would feel in their fourth consecutive week, and so many matches - is that this week, the Antalya tournament has moved over to their clay courts; each pf the three preceding week that Rebecca won a title, it was on the hard courts.
But what a comeback! Even if nothing else happens, a wonderful self-affirmation.

From the remarkable doesn't necessarily have to mean 'good' category:
Today, Sloane Stephens won her first professional match since she Won the US Open Final - 25 weeks ago.
It is her 9th match since then.

Ostapenko just won the first set against Bencic. Remarkable only because she had run out of challenges. I think this might be the first time I've ever seen that done.

(Just a subjective impression, but something I started to notice a couple of years ago - any player running out of challenges almost always loses that set.)

I toyed with best place to put this, but decided here was appropriate. I was saddened to read today that Ken Flach, one half of the Seguso and Flach pairing in the mid to late 80's has died, aged 55, from sepsis resulting from bronchitis which formed into pneumonia. Flach was a 4 time Slam champion in mens doubles including 2 Wimbledon titles and an Olympic gold medal. Flach and Seguso were a great pairing and seemed decent guys and it is v.sad to hear of someone dying at such tender age. As a 52 year old man, I feel very mortal reading this.

Congratulations to Maria Sakkari, who in this weeks ranking moves from WR48 to WR42.
So?
Well, that means that she has now moved one place ahead of the best ever ranking achieved by her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, from 1987.
She is also Greece's second highest ever ranked female player - after Daniilidou, who reached WR14

Hats off to Mate Pavic who becomes Doubles World #1 on Monday! In an incredibly tight ranking, Kubot and Melo are just 30 points behind and Marach another 40.

Roger first went to #1 on 2nd February 2004. And that position has been held by one of the 'big 4' ever since.
