RE: Remarkable non-GB performances

There's the answer, turn off and I did for about a decade. What has turned me back on though is the capability of the big 4 to take them apart, almost everytime.

Yes, I very nearly stopped watching tennis in the Sampras ere; I only kept watching in the hopes he would get beaten. I'm doing the same with these fellas. I may watch a bit of the replay of Isner/Raonic just to see how bad it was, but watching it live - nah.

Is there a money back clause for any match involving Karlovic, Raonic and Isner? It's not their fault they are 6,7 plus and have awesome serves, but......

L16 at Miami was Raonic vs Isner. 3 sets. 3 TBs. About 40 aces. Isner the winner with a grand total of 1 BP achieved in the entire match and none taken. Raonic with 3 BPs earned and none taken. Apart from big serve, big follow up groundstroke, was there genuine top 500 tennis skill on show here?

Has anyone noticed Karlovic flying up the rankings again in the twilight of his career?

Not sure what the answer is, but it is an instant turn off for me.

At least it was scheduled for 2AM in the morning our time.

It would have been better if it had been on a non-televised court.

Janko Tipsarevic marked his return to the sport (after 18 months out with a benign foot tumour) with a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(9) win against Clezar in the opening round in Houston - saving two match points in the process.

Teliana Pereira - first Brazilian woman to win a main tour singles tournament in 27 years.
Weak field in Bogota, for sure, but she did beat #1 seed, Svitolina, and former Queen of Clay, Schiavone in the process, so well done to her.

Of course, for Teliana, a bigger challenge than winning a Tour level tournament on clay, is probably winning a Tour level match on anything other than clay!

Not exactly remarkable but a noteworthy result for 17 year old Andrey Rublev (WR 329) who has beaten Fernando Verdasco in the first round of Barcelona. He had already won two good matches against Huta Galung and Gombos in qualifying.

This lad has all the makings of a huge star. He is still a skinny kid who looks like he could do with a good meal but already has a monster of a forehand and pretty impressive backhand as well. Once he matures, both physically and mentally (he still acts like a typical 17 year old) he could be really, really good.

The other junior that is going really well at the moment is Tiafoe, who has moved very quickly onto the challenger circuit.

Hmm, on second thoughts perhaps I'd like to withdraw my nomination.

Here are highlights from the final: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McnQdIc79NA

I don't remember her making that noise before. This seems an even more blatant example of cheating than Sharapova. I realise there's some audio de-synch at play, but other versions also show that the shouting is often still going on as the ball reaches her opponents racquet.

In the Savannah Challenger, one Julio Peralta has made the doubles finals. According to Josh Meisele, ATP writer: "Julio Peralta is Victor Estrella version 2.0. On and off career for 14 years. For perspective, Peralta retired in 2004 after this: Groin injury, fractured lumbar vertebra and shoulder, hepatitis & periostitis of tibia. Peralta then began a degree in civil engineering in 2005, returned to pro tennis in 2007, retired again in 2008, returned once again." Well done he.

At the other extreme, I see that there are three teenagers (Fratangelo, Chung - who will soon be top 100 at this rate, and Tiafoe) in the singles QFs.

Chung will be top 100 if he wins tonight.  Even if he loses he might make it depending on a couple of other results.

Which he duly did. Does that make him the youngest in the top 100? Such an impressive player. The other SF is James McGee v Frances Tiafoe (17). Has anyone seen Mr Tiafoe play? I remember reading some comments last year to the effect that he was impressive but that there were issues with his technique. But his progress this year has been remarkable - in his last three challengers, he's reached the QF, QF and SF. Something must be going right!

Chung turns 19 in a few weeks time so Coric is roughly 6 months younger than him.

Speaking of Coric I see that he is no longer coached by Zeljko Krajan. Amusingly it seems that the notorious hard line coach wanted to spend a bit more time with his family and the ruthless Coric expected his coach to be with him on a full time basis.

He is still 17, his ranking in January was over 1000 and has now climbed nearly 700 places in 3 months. This week he is at 381 and is playing the top seed in the challenger in Tallahassee. He has picked up 10K in prize money this year alone and is in line for a WC for the French Open

And this week Rublev takes out Damir Dzumhur in Istanbul. That is his 5th win over a top 100 player this season.
