Week 1 - ITF ($25,000) - Hong Kong, China - Hard

Chong is 17 and has no real pedigree as a junior and Tara has a straight forward draw to QF where she is likely to meet Savchuk

First set to Tara ( and I should think so too ! ) by 6-2.

2-0* up in the second set.

Good to get the 1st win under her belt.

I'm hoping for a big breakthrough from Tara in 2014

Her second round match could be a bit tricky(assuming she beats the qualifier). The Chinese girl is close to a CH and ranked inside top 300

Didn't realise they had changed all the ITF points. Only 5pts now for an opening 25K win.

There will be a lot of rankings changes in the middle rankings until this settles down. People like EWS, Naomi, Tara may suffer.

Generally folk are going to be in pretty much the same boat re the ranking points changes ( generally less points for early round exits and the relative reward for winning titles now more like the ATP ).

In fact, as has been mentioned before, Naomi who was already looking good for a significant rankings rise with over half her points having been earned from October on, will now have that exagerrated by retaining for so long points earned at the previous higher level. She has a very good opportumity for a new CH before October.

As for Tara, her 2013 points were pretty evenly spread through the year ( as distinct to her more usual better second halves ) so the ranking point changes shouldn't really effect her too much.

Those who are liable to suffer a bit in the short term ( even more than usually ) are players whose current ranking points are weighted to the first half of 2013.
