European League Club Tennis

May 13th

In Div 3, the Capdenac team romped home:

Marcus Willis won in two, 0 & 0, against a pretty lowly ranked player.
Jack Carpenter also won in two. Both won their dubs. Team won 6-0.

The Ardres team also won 6-0 with Dan Cox winning both singles (against a pretty decent player) and doubles.

Damon Roberts lost his singles but won the dubs and his team lost 2-4

Josh Goodall's team's result is not in yet.

Div 4:

Tom Farq. won both his singles and dubs very easily and the team won 5-1

Neil P lost again, to Frederico Gil, which is no real disgrace, in three sets. But he also lost his dubs and the team lost 2-4

The result from Josh Goodall's team still not it - maybe the match got postponed.

In Div 1B (the highest playing at this time of year), for the St Malo team, Stuart Parker - playing number 3 - lost his match by a whisker 4-6 in the third - to a higher ranked player (-15 as opposed to -4/6). But he won his doubles. The team drew 3-3

The British lads didn't fare too well in Div 1B:

Playing for Annecy, Billy lost in a third-set tie-break to Manuel Guinard.
Josh Paris lost in two sets to a -4/6 (as said, Josh is well over-ranked at his administrative ranking of N73)

However, Stuart Parker, playing number 3 for the opposition, St Malo, held up our honour, with an excellent win against Hugo Voljacques , WR 751

Stuart+ then beat Billy and Josh in the doubles, in a MTB
Annecy won the other doubles so the final score was
Annecy 2 - St Malo 4

In Div 2

Matt Short got a good win, 7-6, in the third but lost his dubs in a MTB. However, his win was the only point his team got so they should be pleased.

The result from Clamart (O'Mara, Gabb and Feaver) is not in yet.

In Div 3, the Capdenac team won 5-1

Marcus Willis beat Nicolas Tourte in two sets. Jack Carpenter also won in two. Both men won their doubles (playing with other team mates)

Ardres won 6-0. Dan Cox won his singles comfortably against a not very high ranked player, and his doubles.

For Beauchamp, Josh Goodall lost in two (7-5 6-0) against Bernardo Seraiva WR 719. Also lost dubs and team lost 0-6

Damon Roberts also lost his matches and the team (Vignal) lost 1-5

In Div 2, the missing men's result is not great:

Richard Gabb, playing number 1, lost easily to a -15.

Also, lost his doubles and the team lost 0-6

How many matches has Farq played? Wonder if he will give the grass a shot. Surely he will...

Just to note that in the Pre-National division, I think I missed out the third team match of Lucy Brown (playing number one) who won her match easily, and her doubles, and the team won 5-1.

They are now sitting on three easy victories, with two matches to go. They should get promoted back to Nationals where they belong (assuming Lucy plays for them)

Yes, CD, that was a couple of weeks ago - they play again on Sunday. Lucy hasn't dropped a set so far. I must refresh myself on the ranking system that you posted some time ago.

Apart from a successful time in French league tennis, anyone know what Lucy Brown is generally doing these days?

WR 540 at age 19 and with a good looking game, and still only 25, it was a pity that she didn't really come through as would have been expected. Think she had injury issues?

She had a number of injuries that held her back, then couldn't get her ranking back up enough to get into tournaments, and the finances told in the end. She stopped competing in September 2016 (I think). Last match was probably the SF win at Sutton in the MD with Dan Smethurst (given a WO in the final by Jay and Yasmin). She got her coaching qualifications, and started coaching full-time at Billesley, but I believe has moved on.

I had a chat once with her dad, a lovely guy, and he was rather bitter about the way the LTA had failed to help Lucy. She was doing pub work and such to try and cover costs despite having been the top junior and still getting nothing.
