European League Club Tennis

As per the sensible request on the other page, (and as it concerns some of our best players), here is a thread exclusively for our GB players (men and women) who take part in the European club tennis leagues. Thanks CD. Can you also provide links to the results/league sites. Steven's H2H stats exclude this type of event, but when relevant it may be useful to also look at league matches too.

This public site lists all the matches but it's not easy to find individual player's results, you have to know what you're looking for i.e. which division, which pool, etc. etc. - there are zillions of different teams, even just in the national 'France' heading.

www.gs.applipub-fft.fr/fftfr/frameset.do

(Naomi's team, for instance, is under France, femmes, Championnat de France Interclubs Seniors Dames 2014, ouvrir, DN1A, poule B, rencontres, click on FdM (feuille de match) over on far right for any of Clermont Ferrand's matches).

There is also a site that lists the players individual results' sheets (so you can see all Naomi's results for instance) but you have to be an FFT member to access it.

Sorry, don't know if that helps much.

Just to be complete, neither Dom Inglot nor James Ward actually played any club matches this year but they are both on the 2013/2014 team sheets so may still be under contract of some sort (or just members of the club)

Dom's team (in Div 1) ended up 3rd in the pool of 6 and so won't make the play-offs (but won't be relegated)

James' team (in Div 1A - just below Div 1) has ended up 5th out of 6 (I think that means they're OK - pretty sure only one team gets relegated from each pool - but they do change the rules a lot)

Nice picture of Naomi:

both her and Tara are playing today (away against Stade Toulouse).

"La grande Naomi constituera une solide paire britannique au côté de Tara Moore, remise de ses problèmes abdominaux.?"

Yet again the British girls come up short in the singles:

Tara, playing as number one, lost to Angela Leweurs 7-5 6-3 (Angela is an unranked 17 year-old who has only played three tournaments this year but who, unexpectedly, won the 17-18 year-old national championships this summer).

Naomi lost to Aurelia Janczek 6-1 4-6 6-2

Aurelia, age 25, is also unranked and doesn't play the professional circuit (I think she tried a year or two of it when 18 or so and then settled on studies and career and just club tennis).

The two Brits played together in the doubles and managed to win that, 6-4 6-0, beating the same two girls.

Overall, Clermont-Ferrand lost 4-2

 Yep, no getting round that.

It was on clay so I guess that doesn't suit either Tara or Naomi (and the Toulouse girls play on clay all the time).

Maybe we'll see Angela flying up the rankings but I really expected Tara to beat her - Angela's got no real track record apart from the surprise nat.championship win.

I think that Naomi's loss rather shows how strong club tennis is in France. At any club in a large city (and there'll be half a dozen top clubs for each large city) there is a handful of players who could all be inside the top 500 if they played the circuit. (At the top clubs of smaller towns there will be a handful who could be top 1200 say).

This is backed up by their results in league tennis and all the money tournaments throughout the year.

The reason these players don't want to play the pro circuit is for a whole heap of reasons - i.e. because they don;t think they'll make the top 100 and make a living; because they've got the makings of a good career in something else and so top club tennis is enough; because they've got a boyfriend/girlfriend/family where they live and don't want to travel all the year long. A lot of these players train four of five times a week, tennis and physical training, with other 'pseudo' top-500 players, play top matches (usually over 50 a year), get paid something, sometimes have sponsors - it's a real tennis life without doing the pro tour.

This isn't league tennis but just to mention that I notice that Eleanor Dean played one of the reasonable French money tournaments in January and won comfortably, beating the player currently ranked WR 1231.

Neither Naomi or Tara have been nominated for a team this year and I don't believe they played in the Aegon league last year so I guess the answer is nol

This year though, the following players have been nominated

Harriet Dart, Fran Stephenson - Cumberland

Joss Rae - Raynes Park

Lucy Brown, Laura Deigman - Halton

Sam Murray, Anna Fitzpatrick, Jess Ren - Holcombe Brook

Manisha Foster - Edgbaston

Lisa Whybourn, Anna Smith - Bath

Emily Webley-Smith - VA Gloucester

Beth Askew, Eden Silva - Wilton

Plus a whole host of retired professionals (Keothavong, Cavaday, Katie O'Brien amongst them) plus one or two foreign ranked players and a whole host of great juniors / aspiring professionals / uni players on hols

I would like to create an A1 Pharmaceuticals LTC Aegon team for ladies I have found it very useful for our younger performance players to brush shoulders with the pros during & prior to Aegon matches

James Allemby (who is often see in the qualifying rounds of the ITF 10ks) has been playing league tennis, as player number 2, for his club down in the south-east. I think they're in the Pre-national league. They've won all their pool matches (James playing and winning three times) and are now in the play-offs - their semi is this weekend and they're favourites for that. The final (playing to go up to the lowest national league, if I've got it right) in on May 1st.
Good luck to James and Rognac.
