Rio 2016

A bit random, but saw this picture of the stadium for Rio 2016 ... so thought I'd post it. https://twitter.com/PedroRFET/status/399260498241138689/photo/1 Anyone else seen it? Know if it's accurate?

There is a new Atp 500 event starting there next year and it is down as Red Clay so unless the change the surface it will be the first Olympics on Clay since 1992

Fair enough. When we've just had an Olympics on grass, don't think anyone can really moan about it being on clay ( most players are competitive on at least one or the other, even if they may prefer hard ). I always kind pf assumed it would be on clay.

I don't think the Olympics 2016 is being played at the same venue as the ATP500 starting next year.

The original post refers to a brand new stadium, as yet unbuilt, for the Olympics.  The surface isn't clear but it could yet be hard court although clay is much more likely.

The ATP500, starting next year as a combined ATP/WTA event and featuring Nadal, is being held at The Jockey Club Brasileiro which has 8 courts (1 of which will be converted to a 7000 seat stadium court) and is CLAY for definite.

In that article it states that only after 2016 might the event be played on the specially built Olympic venue.

Meanwhile the State of Rio is parting company with the ATP (it was a sponsor of the WTF 2012/13) according to this snippet.

Rio who wanted the ATP Finals taken away from O2 London in 2016 now looks unlikely, according to Rio Government cutting their contract w/ATP. "The agreement with ATP is in the process of termination" - Source: http://tenisnews.band.uol.com.br/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=58236 . However, 2014 ATP 500 Rio tournament remains.

The draw has for the tennis tournament has been made.  Fine detail not yet available, but as reported by the Beeb:

Top seed Novak Djokovic has been drawn against 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the very first round.

Kyle Edmund takes on Jordan Thompson of Australia.

In the women's singles, 10th seed Johanna Konta plays Stephanie Vogt of Liechtenstein, while Heather Watson also faces a player outside the top 250 in Peng Shuai of China.

Doubles draw:

Jamie and Andy Murray v Andre Sa and Thomaz Bellucci (BRA)

Colin Fleming and Dom Inglot v Santiago Gonzalez and Miguel Angel Reyes Varela (MEX)

Johanna Konta and Heather Watson v Jelena Jankovic and Aleksandra Krunic (SRB)

The link from the ITF's home page is slightly better, but not all the draws are showing yet, & they're not worth printing! furious

Men - singles

L64:  Jordan Thompson (AUS) WR 92 (CH = 88 in June) vs Kyle Edmund WR 83 (CH = 67 last month)

L64:  Viktor Troicki (SRB) WR 35 (CH = 12 in June 2011) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2 (= CH)

Doubles

L16:  Santiago González & Miguel Ángel Reyes (MEX) CR 162 (52+110) vs Colin Fleming & Dom Inglot CR 87 (59+28)

L16:  André Sá & Thomaz Bellucci CR 162 (60+102) (BRA) vs (2) Andy Murray & Jamie Murray CR 169 (163+6) (*)

The seeding for Andy & Jamie must be something to do with Andy's singles ranking!

Women - singles

L64:  Heather Watson WR 67 (CH = 38 in January last year) vs Peng Shuai (CHN) WR 264 (CH = 14 in August 2011)

L64:  Stephanie Vogt (LIE) WR 290 (CH = 137 in February 2014) vs (10) Johanna Konta WR 13 (= CH)

Incredibly, the ITF site shows an Aussie flag against Jo's name! disbelief

Doubles

R1:  Johanna Konta & Heather Watson CR 175 (88+87) vs Jelena Jankovic & Aleksandra Krunic (SRB) CR 135 (86+49)

Kyle should see that as very winnable, although Jordan may say the same. If Troicki was British the BOA would have banned him from olympic participation for life as far as I understand it, assuming that British only ruling still applies for those convicted of a drug ban.

Eh, seed in doubles based on a singles ranking ?!

Granted it happens that Andy's very good at doubles, but this quite rightly isn't done on tour. Shome mistake ??

Thanks, never knew.

Do they seed the top swimming breaststokers in the freestyle heats too? confuse Bloomin heck, I'm sure that amuses the doubles specialists.

Though given it's presumably still the ITF running the tennis I seriously don't get it. I was thinking maybe to attract top singles players, but they can still use their singles ranking for entry, they don't need to be seeded too ...

It is pretty funny Monfils (career 21-72) and Bautista Agut (career 13-35) are seeded for doubles.

How come Nole isn't playing today. I thought it was top half today, bottom half tomorrow?

Quite a few upsets already in the Women's game, Radwanska out, Garcia/Mladenovic out, Venus out, and Round 1 isn't even complete!
