Week 46 - Challenger ($50,000) - Champaign, IL, USA (hard)

A half-empty qualifying draw here.

QR2: (q1) Dan Smethurst WR 485 v Fares Ghasya (LIB) WR 2030 (CH 1515 in Sep)
QR2: (q3) Josh Milton WR 583 v (wc) Bruno Abdel Nour (SYR) UNR (CH 1086 in 2011)
QR2: (q8) George Coupland 820 v Cameron Silverman (USA) WR 1809 (CH 1607 in Jul) or (wc) Brian Page Jr (USA) UNR

The winners meet of the last two matches meet in the FQR.

Ghasya did well in qualies last week (much better than his ranking would suggest) and Abdel Nour seems to be a pretty successful college player at the local university, though I always find it quite hard to work out exactly what all the achievements listed actually mean - http://www.fightingillini.com/sports/m-tennis/mtt/bruno_abdelnour_561785.html

Let's see how Smethurst Fares against Ghasya.

(Not pronounced the same, I know, I know.)

Think Ghasya will beat Smethurst. Although that's going entirely on Dan's form and Ghasya's run through qualies the other week.

Well, thank goodness for small mercies (and that's one of the 300 pound LTA cheques that's got to be signed - edit: thinking along the same lines, paulisi, although I guess they can gold off sending it for a few days, you never know, they may need to do a bigger one!).

The singles draw is out too, with reasonable first rounds but with Dave playing Smyczek in the second round if he wins.

QR2: (q1) Dan Smethurst WR 485 beat Fares Ghasya (LIB) WR 2030 (CH 1515 in Sep) by 6-4 1-6 7-6(3)
QR2: (q3) Josh Milton WR 583 beat (wc) Bruno Abdel Nour (SYR) UNR (CH 1086 in 2011) by 1 & 3
QR2: (q8) George Coupland 820 v Cameron Silverman (USA) WR 1809 (CH 1607 in Jul)

George plays tomorrow, when Dan & Josh's FQR opponents will be decided too

L32: Dave Rice WR 349 v Takanyi Garanganga (ZIM) WR 459 (CH 342 in Jul)
L32: Ed Corrie WR 329 v Eric Quigley (USA) WR 597 (CH 479 in Aug)

H2H 0-2 - Quigley beat Ed in 2 sets in Charlottesville last year and in 3 sets in Glasgow early this year, so Ed is getting closer. They are also old college foes, playing each other at least twice (1-1) according to http://bit.ly/17LoFQi, so Ed has beaten him at least once before.

Dan has started and lost his serve immediately, but has broken a couple of times and leads 5-3 first set.

Well reading about Nour's accolades on his College Bio, not many of them seem tennis related, which sounds promising:

  • Second-Team Academic All-American
  • Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award
  • Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winner
  • Capital One Academic All-District Award winner
  • Academic All-Big Ten honoree

Squeaky culo time. 3rd set tie break.

Given Dan's recent results, I wonder how his nerves are holding up.
