Week 46 - Challenger ($50,000) - Yokohama, Japan (hard)

James Ward should be in the main draw here. Not the nicest qualifying draws ...

QR1: (q7) Brydan Klein WR 335 v Kittipong Wachiramanowong (THA) WR 806 (CH 457 in 2010) - H2H 0-2 Bangkok Ch 2009 & Burnie Ch 2010
QR1: Richard Gabb WR 417 v (q3) Chase Buchanan (USA) WR 276 (CH 271 last week)
QR1: Alex Ward WR 343 v (q5) Chen Ti (TPE) WR 305 (CH 200 in May) - H2H 1-0, 3 & 4, Phnom Penh Fut. SF 2012

No Ashley this week, it seems.

Pity Evo not here. It looked a nice string of Asian challengers to complete a real breakthrough season for him.

But if as Gary intimated, he has basically hit the wall ( and not set the wall too low ! ) then fair enough. I now really hope he has a good, productive close season and comes out firing in 2014.

Dino plays Kavcic in the first round. No easy points here, then!

Brydan lost his match in three sets.
Gabb is a set and two  breaks down. 4-6, 0-4*.

Lex is about to begin.

Dino will not get a seeding unless there are a few late withdrawals.

Another very good result from Alex :

QR1: Alex Ward WR 343 def. (q5) Chen Ti (TPE) WR 305 (CH 200 in May) 7-6 (5) 7-6 (0)

and well done to Richard for a close score - it hasn't been an amazing tour for him but he's been competitive and proved that he's not far off.

NB that Champaign draw, Salmon, is the best US one by a country mile. Hopefully, the LTA will be writing lots of GBP300 and GBP500 cheques !!! (well, two 500s and one 300 . . .)

Gabb fought well and was *3-4 at one stage, but then Chase broke him and then held serve to win 6-4, 6-3.

AWard 5-4* Chen in the first set.

And here's the Champaign qualies draw - http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2013/637/qs.pdf

I am assuming the ZERO points for qualifying shown at the bottom of the drawsheet is a misprint and not a reflection of the weak field.

Hah, the same thought did occur to me, but given this qualies draw from a few days back, I'm fairly sure that it's just a typo.

Brydan was a break up in the final set but lost the last few games to go out to the Thai again. A good win for Alex though, repeating his Phnom Penh semis win from last year. And a rubbish draw for James ...

QR1: (q7) Brydan Klein WR 335 lost to Kittipong Wachiramanowong (THA) WR 806 (CH 457 in 2010) by 4-6 6-7(6) 6-4 bleh
QR1: Richard Gabb WR 417 lost to (q3) Chase Buchanan (USA) WR 276 (CH 271 last week) by 4 & 3
QR1: Alex Ward WR 343 beat (q5) Chen Ti (TPE) WR 305 (CH 200 in May) by 7-6(5) 7-6(0) biggrin

QR2: Alex Ward WR 343 v Daniel Nguyen (USA) WR 539 (CH 418 in May)

L32: James Ward WR 172 v (2) Blaz Kavcic (SLO) WR 98 (CH 68 in 2012)

Kavcic was the player who beat James 6-4 6-3 6-4 in R1 of last year's Australian Open. However, he did get upset by Ireland's James McGee in R1 in Yeongwol this week.

Talking of Yeongwol, James's conqueror Taro Daniel has gone on to reach the Final (so maybe that loss wasn't quite so shocking after all), where he will play Klein's conqueror Klahn ... and the other two semi-finalists were Alex's conqueror Wu and the aforementioned McGee.

Wasn't he called "KittiPHong" at one point of time? Too many people struggled to pronounce his name, I guess.

He was, and still is on the ITF site - one of those cases where the player's name differs between the ATP and ITF sites. I'd guess the 'ph' version is a more accurate reflection of how it is pronounced.
