And this is why the LTA authorities have done a fantastic job with the bonus payments. As Bob says, the organisers give you nothing, but a final round appearance in Challenger qualies gets you £300 from the LTA, which is all right for short distance trips.

I personally think that one should get 1 ranking point for getting to the FQR in the smaller Challengers (where you get 3 for qualifying), and 2 ranking points for the bigger ones (where you get 5 for qualifying.) In an ideal world, wins of a similar level should fetch you similar points, and nearly always, winning a Futures match is easier than getting to the FQR of a Challenger.

(Of course, it's not like 1 or 2 ranking points matter too much inside the top 500, but that would be fairer, I believe.)

Good point Salmon. I'd forgotten that they'd added that - it's new this year isn't it ? My old shhet just has the 500 pounds bonus for making it through qualies to the MD. Agree about the points too.

Yes, it's new....

In 2013 the following improvements have been made to the Tournament Bonus Scheme:
Increased bonuses allocated for Women's $25k events.
£500 bonus for reaching the FQR in ATP/WTA tour events.
£300 bonus for reaching the FQR in ATP Challengers.
Slight increase in bonuses for those reaching QF and better of $10ks and $15ks.
New bonus introduced for Doubles SF in Women's $50ks and Men's ATP Challengers.

There's a lot of room for improvement, but they are fine-tuning the system, so let's give them some time to make it perfect.

The ATP, unfortunately, will probably not change their points system anytime soon. You get 10 points for making it to the final of a 10K, but only 6 points for making it to the FQR of an ATP 250. Even in some of the weakest of Tour events, the qualies draw is far tougher than the main draw of your average 10K. Let's look at it this way... there are so many British players who have made it to a 10K Final in 2013, but how many of them can make it to the FQR of ANY Tour event? About 5 or 6?

QR1:  Neil Pauffley WR 474 defeated (q5) Kevin Krawietz (GER) WR 399 by 4 & 4 biggrin

*****

QR2:  Purav Raja (IND) WR 881 vs Neil Pauffley WR 474

Raja's a doubles specialist, so perhaps Neil has earned a just reward for seeing off the q5. wink

That's a very good win The fact that Raja is a doubles specialist and his singles ranking is based on relatively few matches may mean he is more of a threat than his ranking implies, but nevertheless, he should be a weaker singles player than the one Neil just beat

Good win for Neil. And, yep, Raja seems a 'nice' opponent for the next round.
But wouldn't he then get the number one seed ? Mektic ? And has to beat him even to get any points at all ? What are the pay cheques for winning a round or two in challenger qualies ? Do you get something at least ?

According to the draw sheet, 1st round loser in the MD gets 660 euros but nothing at all for the first two rounds of qualies.

Interesting spots for the qualifiers here though. Two tough ones - Benjamin Becker or Gabashvili - or a qualifier v qualifier match up.

Someone from Qualies is going to get some decent points here.

 I had forgotten that too.
