No problems looking for cheap points to push up the rankings, but this can only happen for so long.

When will the step up be to test at Challenger level?

The average of 20 predictions for Marcus' ranking at the end of 2014 is 280, against his current ranking of 350. So this would suggest that there's not a lot of belief in significant upward progress.

I imagine a few of us were taking into account the fact that because the points system tends to encourage players to stay in Futures if they often win them, players often drop back a bit when they start to play Challengers even if they are playing as well or even better than before - Alex Ward in 2013 is an obvious case in point.

So if Marcus makes it to around WR 280 having played mainly Challengers in the last 2/3rds of the year, I would class that as significant progress.

On reflection I suppose I was being a bit harsh. I'm afraid that I can't help thoughts like this creeping into my mind: "WR 280 at the age of 24, with little real prospect of earning a living (let alone fame or fortune) ... meh".

But I need to rise above it. Our urge to achieve is why we don't still live in caves. smile

(The most pretentious post of 2014?

280 would be good, but not good enough. Let's put it this way... Marcus has probably already seen more years on the men's circuit than he's going to see in the future. If he doesn't start doing well in Challengers (at least a few semis) in 2014, I doubt that he's ever going to make it to the top 100.

I'll keep encouraging every tennis player, but I don't see any point in giving someone a fool's hope.

Statistically, I don't agree with this.  Although for Marcus to make it to over 30 and reach his peak at 27 or 28 (as he should), he's going to have to show great commitment and take good care of himself (diet, fitness etc.), which is not supposed to rekindle that debate but just to say that it's a key point for everyone, and him possible in particular.

But I completely agree that he has to try Challengers and that he should do so in the next six months and the idea of a WR 350 player sticking exclusively to futures for six months is plain daft (in my opinion). NB Dan Cox's idea to go back to a 10k is maybe more understandable (he's done some challengers last year, may well be doing Aussie Qualies; if one accepts that mixing it up is necessary - for financial reasons and match practice etc. - then it maybe makes a certain sense.

Marcus has just tweeted (in his own inimitable style)

Turkey challengers cancelled, stinker. Stinkito, stinky winky. Have to re adjust the schedule now.

I guess at least we know he was planning to move up to Challengers, which is what many of us had hoped. Seems he is now considering India.

Yes, good to know he was intending to play the Turkey Challengers, very disappointing that they've been cancelled.

That leaves just 5 Challengers in Europe in the 1st quarter - Heilbronn in week 4, Bergamo and Quimper in week 7, Cherbourg in week 9 and Kazan in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan in week 11. No doubt all of them except Kazan will be stacked, unless of course the lack of Challengers in Europe means most Europeans in the 100-200 range decamp to other continents for a while.

I don't know how these things work funding wise but could not Marcus & Lewis have made Japan this week? Everyone and his dog seems to want them to play challengers, this could have been a big high to finish on after their Thai trip. I am pretty sure they'd have made the doubles cut, Marcus would have made singles with Lewis having a decent chance at getting through via qualies.

As I say, what do I know but having just finished 3 x 10k's in Asia I'd have thought it was possible at a time when there's slim pickings challenger wise.

I completely agree with all of this and definitely think it was a missed opportunity.

They would have made the doubles cut and had Marcus initially entered, he would have made singles main draw. Because Marcus didn't enter it in the first place, he could have had the option for signing in for qualifying but would have missed that because of the F3 singles final. Still, I think it would have benefited them to go over and both play just the doubles event.

As I've been saying Shh and as you mention, the boys really should have taken the opportunity because their CR really will not get them into many challengers right now because there are so few. This was one of them perfect isolated challengers that had the low enough cut.

Marcus & lewis get record 11th futures pro title in just 8 months but the risk of missing a Wimbledon doubles WC maybe lead to them splitting to get into wimbledon maindraw

Lewis is going to Roma with dan Evans in a bid  to pick up big doubles points to make the new cut that leon has advised for wimbledon Doubles CR 400

at moment we are closing on it fast but going to be tough before WC announcement lets hope that Marcus record 13 pro doubles titles in only 12 months catches the al Englander selectors eyes as should the defeat of a CR 170 pair in a recent challenger .

Marcus & Lewis deserve the recognition lets gore they get it !
