Week 42 - ITF ($25K) - Lagos, Nigeria - Hard

Would you believe it? They go all the way to Nigeria and ... no

L32: (7) Naomi Broady WR 286 v Emily Webley-Smith WR 427

ITF H2H 2-2 - Naomi won in 2008 and 2010, Emily in 2011 and this year - one 2-set win and one 3-set win each.

Yep. They're number one seeds in the doubles, playing two Nigerian WCs in the first round.

I played tennis in Nigeria once !!! The court was seriously pot holed and the humidity so high I could hardly stand up after about 5 minutes

Doubles title is surely easy pocket money for the girls I'd think based on the line ups. Would like to see Em do well here get back in the top 300. On her day she is probably as good as Sam and certainly jade and Lisa just a pity it doesn't always happen.

I like Emily, and wish her nothing but the best. But I'd say that it is quite some time ( some might question if ever ) since she has played as well as Sam has at her best.

EWS back to 3-3.

I'm with Indiana - I like Emily a lot and I think her tweets, and her attitude, are a breath of fresh air.
And I think that in terms of natural talent, physique etc., she's up there with Sam and Jade and Lisa.
But I think that in her early career she allowed herself to make a game out of chipping and chopping whenever she got in trouble and thinking that variation in that sense was good. It paid dividends in some matches and got her a certain way but I believe that if she'd forced herself to play 6 months of regular top-spin aggressive tennis (whatever the results), she'd have a far better game today.

However, she could certainly get back up 100 places with no problem and the Em/Naomi match is always an enigma because Naomi has some of the same problems as Em.

Naomi held for 5-4* then Emily held 5-5, NB held 6-5* NB 2 bps (set points) 7-5

Into a 3rd set

Emily breaks to 15 *1-0

Naomi breaks to 30 1-1

Not many bps being saved, given the percentage of other points the server is winning

Naomi holds to 15 2-1* Emily holds 2-2 Naomi holds 3-2* Emily holds 3-3

Naomi holds for 4-3* despite her 10th df (NB 9 aces. Emily has 3 aces 7 dfs)

Don;t get me wrong - I love the girl. And, unlike Naomi, it's too late really her for her to change so I just hope she wins some good matches, goes up in the rankings and enjoys herself.
