True, though this tends to be his best part of the year so he needs the points to cover those due to drop off - as well as the 18 from Hambach last year (which dropped off just before he defended them this year), he has 31 points to defend between late October and late November.
The good news is that if he gets anywhere close to defending them, he could make big strides early next year (assuming he carries any good form over this time) because he only has 8 points to defend in the 6 months between the end of November and the end of May!

Apparently (from Neil), Dinslaken pulled out injured, so it was actually a withdrawal (for once, the livescores were more accurate!) rather than a default as shown on the drawsheet.
He also makes it clear that the reason no lucky losers filled the 2 vacant spots were that nobody had signed in for the LL places! (maybe that's what comes of playing R1 on a Wednesday)

So Neil battles his way from a set down 500 times in one week to come through an admittedly rather kind draw to record an excellent win in the final and defend his German Futures title.
The question is how much confidence has that given him to push on in the coming weeks. Certainly at the start of this week, the draw continues to be kind to him with a w/o in round followed by a player outside the top 1000 in round 2 although the CH suggests it may not be entirely straightforward. This could be a mega productive trip for Neil points wise

They have to do something bad for it to be a proper default The Germans may be running scared of playing 3rd sets against Mr Pauffley ... (hope Thurner is not badly injured, anyway)
Anyway, Neil is now 5-0 from a set down on this trip
L16: (4) Neil Pauffley WR 506 beat David Thurner (GER) WR 1027 (CH 690 in 2011) by 3-6 6-2 3-2 ret.
QF: (4) Neil Pauffley WR 506 v (6) Erik Crepaldi (ITA) WR 567 (CH 515 in Aug)
Neil beat Erik 3 & 4 in the semis on his way to the Hambach title last year.
