Week 41 - ATP Masters 1000 Series: Shanghai Rolex Masters (hard) - doubles

R1:  Dominic Inglot & Treat Huey (PHI) CR 57 vs Max Mirnyi & Horia Tecau (BLR/ROU) CR 50
R1:  (ALT) Lukas Rosol & Bernard Tomic (CZE/AUS) CR 149 vs Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 66
R1:  Colin Fleming & Jonny Marray CR 49 vs Santiago González (an erstwhile partner of Jamie M, if memory serves) & Scott Lipsky (MEX/USA) CR 64

If Dom & TCH get past Mirnyi & Tecau, they'll in all probability have to face Bops & ERV again in the second round. hmm

Whoops!   So they do!  Can't think how I managed to overlook them!   Oversight duly rectified.  Thanks for pointing it out.

With only the Bryans and Peya/Soares confirmed on points, and Paes/Stepanek confirmed because of their USO win, the race on doubles remains relatively open. Linstedt/Nestor appear no longer to be a pairing, so the 14th pair (alongside Huey/Inglot) isn't really in contention.

Of the as-yet unqualified pairs ahead of Murray/Peers, Gonzalez and Lipsky (11) are (subject to my wretched computational skills) 135 points ahead; Benneteau/Zimonjic (10) are 360 points ahead; Mirnyi/Tecau (9) are 565 points ahead; Fyrstenberg/Matkowski (8) are 645 points ahead; Marrero/Verdasco (7) are 685 points ahead; Melo/Dodig (6) are 870 points ahead; and Qureshi/Rojer (5) are 880 points ahead. Meanwhile, charging up from behind are Bopanna and ERC, currently a mere 55 points behind.

Looking upwards, if Marray/Fleming were to beat Gonzalez and Lipsky in the first round, they would be doing not only themselves but their compatriot a favour. Ditto with Huey/Inglot and Mirnyi/Tecau (bit of a tougher ask, that).

Huey and Inglot are themselves still in contention as well ... but they have a lot more points to make up and their draw (if it follows form: Mirnyi/Tecau, Bopanna/ERV, Bryans) is rather nasty.

Surely they don't get the 90 points if they lost their 1st round match?

A team that gets a first round bye do not get any points if they lose their second round match.

Yep, that's often been the position with Andy after byes in singles.

Aha. Apologies (earlier post had suggested incorrectly that seeded byes would receive points even if they lost their first match - now edited to avoid further confusion)

YES! Wow that got stressful. Next time if you wanna take your first match point I think I'd be ok with that.

Congrats to them! smile So both teams even up their head to heads following loses earlier this year to their opponents.

6-7(4) 7-6(2) 17-15

Crikey I'm exhausted just watching live scores now...................the winning point was the first time they won on a 2nd serve from their opponents in the whole match!

Jamie's & John's purple patch continues! biggrin

R1:  Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 66 defeated (ALT) Lukas Rosol & Bernard Tomic (CZE/AUS) CR 149 by 5 & 4 in 58 minutes & 57 seconds (alternates must sometimes wonder why they bother! wink )

****

The next round is going to be a tougher challenge:

R2:  (7) Julian Benneteau & Nenad Zimonjic (FRA/SRB) CR 37 vs Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) CR 66

Well done to Colin and Jonny.

Seems like a close one for Dom and Treat. 1 set all, two tiebreaks... match tiebreak.

Aargh. From two match points for Huey/Inglot to 9-9 in the MTB ...
