I may be missing some information but is it correct that Elena has not played since the US Open qualies? Does anybody know what she is up to? Is she injured again?
It's a mystery no doubt, only 2 events since Wimby suggests either retirement did sound good after all or it's all part of a cunning plan to play less events, the grand slams, but still get pleasure out of competing etc., and maintain some sort of ranking, not sure basically.
Bally more or less answered this question in an interview with the BBC about Evo (at least, that's the bit they focused on):
"I'm carrying a couple of injuries at the moment but hopefully I'll get past them and be back on court soon. The Australian Open will probably be qualifying again. But I'm hoping, because I won't have any points to defend until April, everything can go towards my ranking and come the French Open I'll be main draw again."
Still a bit mysterious though, played very well at the US open, and no specification of what/ how serious those injuries are.
Thanks Steven for the information, at least it now sheds some light on the reasons for the layoff, but I still have a sneaky suspicion there's more to it.
I just get the feeling that her heart is not 100% into the comeback after all.
yes, all her tweets and things about her academy and the kids there and I sort of think that's where her attention and focus (and pleasure?) is at the moment. She might have a big balanced gameplan though. . . . go multi-task Bally !
I'm expecting Bally to at least give it one more go next year, and if she's not had much success by the end of Wimbledon then she could well call it a day.
