Week 40 - Challenger ($100,000) - Sacramento, USA (Hard)

Evans is a DA here and it looks like Cox made it in when the last SE cleared yesterday afternoon, had it cleared earlier Peliwo would have got in instead and Cox would have been top seed in qualifying

QR1: (q2) Ed Corrie WR 344 v Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS) WR 953

QR1: Joshua Milton WR 501 v (wc) Matt Seeberger (USA) WR 1650

QR1: (q5) Daniel Smethurst WR 403 v Daniel Nguyen (USA) WR 454

Josh and Dan will meet in round 2 if they both win.

How does it work that Dan got in and not Peliwo based on when the SE was cleared???

Tough match for Dan, qualifying is much harder this week.

It must be based on current rankings rather than rankings when entry was accepted. Dan has now a better ranking than Peliwo, but didn't on the entry list.

Prior to 12 noon US Eastern time (the day before the tournament starts) spaces in the main draw that occur due to players withdrawing or SEs clearing are taken by players from the original alternate list. After this time they are taken by alternates who sign in for qualifying and are based on current rankings. Peliwo was higher than Cox on the original alternate list but Cox is now ranked higher than him.

Thanks for this, RJA.

Mr Milton's opponent must have a "story" behind his wild card: according to the ATP, he's 29 and played his first pro match this year (a Canadian futures).

Mr Smethurst's opponent hasn't played on the tour that much (graduated from university in 2012, having been part of the very talented University of Southern California team), and most of his current points come from winning two relatively weak features in South Korea. Last year, though, at about this time, he also swept through a futures draw, beating Giron, Novikov, Austin Krajicek and our own Mr Bogdanovic along the way.

Mr Kokkinankis' record speaks for itself!

Yes. Well done Josh.

(Of course, the story of the 29 year-old, circa WR 1600, recent first futures ?, is quite intriguing - but Josh still had to beat him)

Dan S. has started.

The match before Josh's is just going into a third set so that'll be a while yet.

The main draw is once again less than ideal.

L32: Daniel Cox WR 268 v (1) Denis Kudla (USA) WR 99
L32: Daniel Evans WR 157 v (5) Rhyne Williams (USA) WR 128
