Week 40 - WTA Premier Mandatory - Beijing,China - Hard

laura gets zakopalova (33) in R1 - pretty decent draw

kerber in R2 - she might be tired after a good run this week in tokyo

hev got a MD wc and has lepchenko (55) in R1 - again pretty good and hev beat her in eastborn this year

kvitova in R2 - also tired after this week in tokyo

Given the top seeds don't get byes in this event so Serena was a potential R1 opponent it's a decent draw for both Laura and Heather.

Was surprised not to see Heather in the qualies draw to pleased to see there was a good reason whysmile

PS like your view on Kerber & Kvitova that they could be tired rather than in the best form they have been in all year!

Was going to ask why Wozniacki got a bye and Serena didn't til I scrolled down further and saw that Kvitova, Kerber and Williams got one as well.

Perhaps a silly question but does that happen often if they're still playing a tournament? I've not seen that before.

P.S. Good to see Heather here. smile

I believe this normally happens with Beijing following Tokyo. It has confused me before.

As far as I can remember, this is the only tournament where R1 byes go to the four semi-finalists in the previous tournament rather than to the top seeds in order.

Kvitova and Kerber won their Tokyo semis earlier today.

Just noticed while doing the 'research' for the tweets that Zakopalová and Lepchenko have both lost their last 4 matches, going back to just before the USO.

Quite impressive from Zakopalová to have made a new career high this year at the age of 31!

Anyway good to see Heather here. When I said that I thought it strange she wasn't in qualifying, I almost said that maybe she had got a MD WC, then I thought "naa".

Ah that's interesting. I did wonder if it was a kind of unique quirk or just something I'd never noticed that happens everywhere. Thanks!

Great draws against out of form players, hopefully they'll stay out of form !.
2nd round draws not so good, and neither Kerber/Kvitova have had too many tough matches this week.

Hev was playing extremely well, best this year by a long way but she's just been broken. Needs to keep her head here.
