Week 39 - Challenger ($50,000) - Napa, USA (Hard)

Dan Evans, Dan Cox and Ed all, seemingly, in the MD.

Dan S. (we need another Dan to make the trio) and Josh M. are first and second seeds in the QD

QR1:

(1) Dan Smethurst - BYE

(2) Josh Milton - BYE

QR2:

(1) Dan Smethurst WR 403 v Mico Santiago (USA) WR 830 CH 795

(2) Josh Milton WR 496 v Philip Holbrook (USA) UNR/ or Mac StySlinger (USA) WR 1152 CH 1066

Edit: just to change to $ in the title

Milton's section is quite nasty: Kokkinakis and Harris are both quite able, and Mitchell Frank and Mac Styslinger are underranked university players.

The inestimable Ken Thomas will be reporting on this event via Radio Tennis.
Can't wait to hear how he pronounces 'Evo' ...

The tournament is also on the USTA pro circuit live streaming schedule so hopefully at least one of the guys gets put on a televised court.

I believe that also means people will get to hear the happy, enthusiastic commentary of Mike Cation again. (If I remember he pronounced it ee-vo rather than ev-o. ) haha

I am sure he will get some "stick" for that.

Who were the jolly chaps commentating on the women's 75k in Albuquerque this week? Never heard anything so depressing

Tough - Two seeds the Brits wanted to avoid and they get them Kudla and Klahn.

Repeat of the recent challenger final for Evo if I remember rightly and a chance for revenge. Is that the match he had match point in? Hopefully can go one point further.

Bad draw for Ed, probably no chance.

Cox could have a worse draw, although Mitchell is a young player certainly on his way up the rankings. Good test for Cox in his first foray into challengers for a while, and I'd say a match he has a chance in at least.

Good revenge chance for Evo.He was within a point of nailing Klahn a month or so ago so it must be doable.

Hmm, Mitchell is 20 and had a career high of 209 in February 2012 so has actually regressed from 19-20, unless there were injuries. Anyone know if he had any injuries or if he just stepped up from Futures to Challengers and maybe struggled for wins for a while?

Kudla hasn't played since 2nd round of the US Open, so perhaps Ed can catch him cold. He did beat Jiri Vesely there though, and take Berdych to 2 tiebreakers so must have been playing pretty well.

This is actually Kudla's first challenger since May, been playing on the full tour. Highlights would be qualifying for both French and Wimbledon, winning a main draw match at Wimbledon and USO and a quarter final at Queen's. Very few matches won apart from that
