Week 38 - WTA ($500K) - Seoul, Korea - Hard

Not the easiest R1/potential R2 draw for Hev

L32: Heather Watson WR 77 v Kimiko Date-Krumm (JPN) WR 63 (CH 4 in 1995)

L16: Watson or Date-Krumm v (2) Maria Kirilenko (RUS) WR 20 (CH 10 in Jun) or Qualifier

I have no idea how Date-Krumm wins so many matches. Every time I see her she is so awful. Fair play to her for being in such shape and in the top 100 after a comeback at her age. Truly incredible, but I reckon Heather will beat her 2 & 1 based on what I've actually seen of her playing

Could be worse, Kiri has not looked good since the French.

Yes, Maria has seemed pretty short of confidence of late, so possibly not as tough as it initially looks. If still not exactly easy !

Well, it is for me.  2am is a ruined night all together, whereas 4am is just extra early morning  and could always join the match a bit later anyway.

Should be an interesting match. After some poor results in the US Open series, Heather's performance against Halep was very encouraging. If she can reproduce that level of performance and positive intent she will win tomorrow. Date-Krumm won't overpower Heather so every reason to think she will try and be quite aggressive.

Unfortunately I won't be watching but if Hev gets a match against Kirilenko I'll certainly get up for that one.

Heather makes KDK wait before serving. Code: fs means forehand immediately after the serve, 3rd shot, similarly bs. Unret is short for unreturned serve. ue is unforced error. agg is an aggressive shot that forces an error (usually). HW is Heather. KDK is Kimiko. df is double fault. Missed means I was too busy typing to see what happened.

HW: Rally, KDK shot clips net, HW forehand winner 15-0. Ace 30-0. 2nd serve KDK dominant finishes with drive volley winner 30-15. HW aggressive forehand 40-15 Missed last point (w-15) 1-0*
KDK: f ue net 0-15. 15-15 Brilliant KDK drop shot winner 30-15. Wild KDK early forehand 30-30 HW poor bh ue wide 40-30 df 40-40 KDK bh ue net 40-A unret 40-40 unret A- HW reaches KDK's short angled volley and hits backhand pass. unret A- df 40-40 KDK fs winner A- unret (w-40) 1-1

HW leaves court for some reason.

HW: rally HW forehand clips net and goes wide 0-15 df 0-30 HW agg bs 15-30 rally KDK bh clips net HW bh winner 30-30 HW dv bs winner 40-30 KDK agg bh ue long (w-30) 2-1*

Heather trying to be aggressive, especially first shot after her serve.

KDK: rally KDK bh ue long 0-15 HW bh ue net 15-15 df 15-30 HW weak f ue net 30-30 KDK f ue net 30-40 KDK fs ue long (broken-30) *3-1

That was a shocking game from both players

HW: terrible drop shot from HW KDK f winner. 0-15 super defence from HW but eventually KDK winner 0-30 unrest 15-30 HW pulls early bh ue wide 15-40 KDK bh ue long 30-40 df (broken-30) 3-2*

Standard has really dropped these last two games.

KDK: return winner 0-15 df 0-30 lovely angled KDK winner 15-30 another netcord but HW's lob is far too low and allows KDK to strike bh smash winner 30-30 KDK f ue net 30-40 KDK agg f 40-40 df 40-A another net cord KDK bh winner 40-40 KDK agg f A- HW bh winner 40-40 HW f ue net A- KDK great defence then misses an easy pass 40-40 Umpire calls HW bh out A- KDK b ue wide 40-40 KDK fs ue net 40-A HW agg finishing with a forehand winner into the open space (broken-30) *4-2

HW: smash after KDK drop 15-0 HW b ue net 15-15 KDK super return winner 15-30 HW wild fs ue long 15-40 HW super b dtl winner 30-40 KDK weak f ue net 40-40 KDK deep return 40-A woeful KDK f ue net when in control of point 40-40 KDK deep return 40-A KDK ue long 40-40 unret A- HW weak bs ue net 40-40 ace A- brilliant KDK b crosscourt winner 40-40 unret 2nd serve A- HW volley winner (w-40) 5-2*

Heather somewhat fortunate to win those last two games. KDK had more than enough opportunities to win at least one, if not both of them.

KDK: KDK fs winner 15-0 unret 30-0 ace 40-0 KDK ue 40-15 unret (w-15) 5-3

A decent service game from Kimiko. Up until then her serve had been dire.

HW: HW agg, KDk lob wide 15-0 unret 30-0 KDK f winner 30-15 wild HW f ue long 30-30 ace 40-30 df 40-40 unret 2nd serve A- KDK attacks 2nd serve then puts away volley 40-40 unret A- unret (w-40) 6-3

A patchy set of tennis. Heather trying to be aggressive whenever possible. Both guilty of some poor shots immediately after their serve.

2nd set

KDK: unr 15-0 unr 30-0 missed 40-0 unr (w-0) 0-1

HW: HW volley KDK puts pass wide 15-0 ace 30-0 HW horrible dv fs ue net 30-15 ace 40-15 unr 2nd serve (w-15) 1-1

KDK: HW ue 15-0 rally KDK b ue wide 15-15 df 15-30 unr 2nd serve 30-30 KDK's surprise net attack surprises herself more than HW 30-40 rally KDK f ue long (broken-30) *2-1

Kimiko rather gifted Heather that break of serve.

HW: KDK agg return then f winner 0-15 HW b ue long 0-30 clean return winner dtl wow 0-40 HW wild bs ue wide (broken-0) 2-2

KDK just too good in that game.

KDK: KDK super crosscourt fh 15-0 HW drop shot too much air KDK pass dtl winner 30-0 HW aggressive ret then bh winner 30-15 KDK poor f ue wide 30-30 KDK agg fs 40-30 HW weak bh ue net (w-30) *2-3

HW: missed 0-15 KDK agg ret 0-30 unr 2nd serve 15-30 KDK poor bh ue net 30-30 KDK awful bh ue long 40-30 KDK super drop shot 40-40 KDK agg ret then wild bh ue wide A- KDK stealth net attack and finishes with a drop volley winner 40-40 unr A- KDK wild bh when in control (w-40) 3-3

Heather somewhat fortunate that KDK played 3 shocking points from 0-30

KDK missed 0-15 2nd serve ace 15-15 KDK poor bs ue net 15-30 unr 30-30 HW agg f just out 40-30 unr 2nd serve (w-30) *3-4

Both players guilty of too many poor 2nd serve returns off modest serves

HW: so naturally KDK hits a clean ret winner 0-15 KDK smash 0-30 missed 15-30 KDK super bh dtl winner 15-40 HW bs winner 30-40 HW weak bh ue net (broken-30) 3-5*

KDK: HW ret winner 0-15 missed 0-30 HW deep ret 0-40 incredibly slow 1st serve unr 15-40 unr 30-40 unr 40-40 KDK bh ue net 40-A HW takes on 2nd serve but ret is well wide 40-40 urn A- df 40-40 unr A- df 40-40 HW deep bh 40-A unr 40-40 unr A- unr 2nd serve (w-40) 3-6

An unreal final game to that set. Astonishing serving from Kimiko to save 5 bps only to twice df on set point. Heather tried to attack a couple of second serve towards the end of the game but only managed to miss the target
