Who is Tom Hill anyway? Any chance of him getting a ranking this week?

The 'Q' is a bit misleading as all the Qs qualified directly.

L32 : Tom Hill (Q) v Mostafa Mohamed Hatem (EGY) WR 2080 - CH 1614 a couple of months ago. Age 18.  (But he's only ever had 1 point, just the way the one-pointers get split up . . . )

Only Tom's second singles event (and third in total, I think). Also age 18. Good chance for him . . .

I'm a bit of a sucker for the underdog !

Sorry RJA re the qualies gaff - didn't look properly. But glad Tom was one of the 5 who got a direct bye through to the MD coz he's now 5*-2 up smile

NB Not saying that Tom is particularly the underdog in this match, just very much one of the 'little men' in Britsih tennis. Rooting for them all . . ..

Just looking at the draw, my favourite Russian player, A Spirin, is playing.......happy days! biggrin

Also checked out Mr Hill's playing activity and he beat a certain Samuel Beddow (GBR), probable brother of the famous Robyn by 0 & 2 over in a qualifying tournament at Bradenton. A Bolletieri boy perchance?

Actually only 5 of them got in directly. 3 of them had to win one qualifying match to make the main draw.

Tom loses the first two games ... but wins the next 3

*3-2 (but another match where serving isn't proving to be much of an advantage so far)

... not to mention the wonderfully named Karim Scremin Ashraf el Hawan - who may well have been "scremin" because sadly he just got double bagelled.

Meanwhile, Tom leads 6-3 4-3*

Bravo, Young Tom !

And he now plays an unranked guy who won his first round by retirement

L16 : Tom Hill (Q) v Daruisz Lipka (POL) UNR CH 1488

Would be cool if he could make his first entry into the rankings with more than one point

I think Tom is now 'last man standing' this week among the Brits.

A test for Steven. When was the last time an unranked Brit was the last one remaining in a week when there was a reasonable number of tournaments being contested? I can't remember such a case in the last few years.

I have a memory of Robyn Beddow doing something similar amongst the women but she may have been ranked at the time.

i'm going to have a guess at Alex Ward in the tournament where he first gained his world ranking, although that was some years ago now...
