A bit sad given that all their opponents were unranked.

Looking on the bright side, at least Hayley managed to fit a winning set into the breadstick sandwich and Helen managed to equal her record for the most games won in a 10K qualifying match (though both were playing opponents who were playing in 10K qualies for the first time), Tehrani often hands out bakery products in QR1s and Tringa has been ranked before, while Imogen is only 15.

I wonder if there's a reason they all entered this tournament together - you quite often see a group of Brits in 10K qualies in Spain (men's and women's 10Ks) and more often than not, they all get thrashed. I hope some of them are getting worthwhile experience and improving.

You are truly a 'glass half full' sort of man, steven - it's a lovely attribute ! I really couldn't see any 'bright side' . . . cry

If there were a 1-10 scoring system for "trying to be nice", I think Steven would have just merited a 12.

I was particularly impressed that even Ms Harvey can now walk away from today's match pleased that she has put in a record-equalling performance! I would have struggled to come up with that one: kudos.

The bright side was a bit 'tongue in cheek,' in case that wasn't obvious!

But equally, we don't know why they were there or what their personal targets are at this stage, and one or more of them might even read this thread, so I didn't want to be gratuitously nasty.

As for 'trying to be nice' on Twitter, when players lose, I tend to just report the facts (or not if nobody is likely to care, e.g. Brydan's loss today) and say something positive if there's anything positive to say. I assume that if a player has lost, they'll be annoyed enough with themselves as it is (if they're not at least a bit disappointed, there's little hope for them long term anyway and nothing any of us can say will change that) - if someone needs to be having a go at them, that's the coach's job.

You're quite right. I try to go by my Granny's adage of 'if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all' - but I don't always succeed !!!!

Is Brydan not a British tennis player ?

It's your twitter, Steven, so clearly up to you. But I guess some folk almost look to you to provide results.

It's not so much that - I didn't tweet Nikki Roenn's loss in Sevilla either, even though (as with Brydan) I had tweeted his draw. I tend not to bother tweeting R1/QR1/QR2 losses in Futures main draws or Challenger qualifying unless it's a close loss to a much higher-ranked player or there's space at the end of a tweet about a win for another Brit there, or unless someone has specifically asked for the result.

Also, the only person on Twitter who ever seems to care about Brydan's results is someone who enjoys telling me how much he loves to see him lose, so why give him the pleasure. I mean, it's fine not to see him as British or to dislike him, but to glory in losses over something a player did 4 years ago and rightly got punished for isn't a fire I want to add unnecessary fuel to.
