Quite surprised this is half-empty, btw - the qualifying draw was full last year when it took place in the equivalent week.

I don't understand why Ed is targetting European clay court Challengers. All very well trying to improve his game, but as a first foray into Challengers would be better to play to your strengths on hard courts. Put simply, he breaks down off the ground with UEs as the rally length increases......a liability.

This week his options were limited, but SURELY outside the grass court season he needs to focus on either blocks of Asian or US hardcourt Challengers, where it's hard to find a run of European hard court events.

Already a set down to the much lower ranked German, Baumann, in his first qualifying match.

It wasn't even close. Time to rethink tournament choices, surely. You can't play hard court Futures and grass tournaments all year and just turn up at clay Challengers and expect to thrive...........it doesn't work like that.

I agree that he needs to look at changing his schedule, but for me he is lacking in confidence and it might be beneficial to go and play the UK $10k tournaments over the next few weeks to go and get that winning feeling and then go back to the challengers.

I think not getting anything our of the grass court season despite playing 3 good matches hit him quite hard. While he was perfectly professional about it he was clearly absolutely gutted at losing his first round qualifying match at Wimbledon.

Worth noting perhaps that Baumann went on to beat Mate Delic (just outside the top 400) in straight sets to qualify.
