RE: Week 34 - US Open women's qualifying - Hard

Putting everything in one place:

QR2: Samantha Murray WR 190 lost to (wc) Taylor Townsend (USA) WR 334 (CH 332 in Jun) by 4 & 5 bleh
QR2: Elena Baltacha WR 244 beat Olga Savchuk (UKR) WR 173 (CH 79 in 2008) by 3 & 0 biggrin

FQR: Elena Baltacha WR 244 v (q12) Michelle Larcher de Brito (POR) WR 118 (CH 76 in 2009) - 1st on Court 6 at 17.00 BST

Bally beat the Portushrieker twice last year, both in straight sets - that crucial 2 & 3 win in Fed Cup in Israel and then 4 & 2 at Nottingham 75K.

After today's win, Elena is provisionally back to GB no. 5 ahead of Tara, just a few places outside the top 200.

Townsend is probably underranked, so that's not a bad performance. (Juniors doing quite well generally - I make it three girls and two boys in the FQR. Not bad) And hurrah for Ms Baltacha! Great stuff. So good to see her return.

Sad. It was never going to be a match that was on Bally's racket, even in the first set Michelle created all the pressure, but Bally got one chance and took it.

She had so many break points and game points early in the third and that just killed the match off. Michelle is so streaky and so fragile that if she had just gotten ahead, well who knows.

Shes playing at a top 100 level no doubt. Hope her ranking catches up soon.

Better than predicted, and very encouraging for someone who is still, in a sense, "returning."

Solid match from Sam, IMO Townsend was a solid favourite given her pedigree, remember she was 5-2 in the final set against Robbo only a couple of years ago, and is playing well. Also quite cool to get to play on Louis Armstrong.
