Week 33 - Challenger (€42,500+H) - Cordenons, Italy (Clay)

L32: Ed Corrie WR 329 v Gianluca Naso (ITA) WR 293 (CH 175 in 2012)

Yes, that's right - the player Kyle just beat in the Bolzano Final!

Going by a couple of tweets it looks like the Skupski brothers and Jamie Delgado will be here in the doubles.

Jamie is playing with Polish player Mateusz Kowalczyk this week and they are second seeds. Unfortunately they have been drawn to play the Skupski brothers in round 1.

Playing a good physical, solid game and putting a lot of balls onto Naso's BH which breaks down rather conveniently (and then gets him frustrated so he starts putting the FHs long too), Ed breaks again and will serve for the set at 5-2

and with an ace he closes out the first set . . .smile 6-2

Corrie grabs a second break and will serve at *5-2. Looking good so far. Lots of errors from Naso.

Serves it out with an ace to take the set 6-2. Very impressed by what I have seen. Wasn't expecting it. Corrie looks very accomplished on this surface and is constructing points well. Surprised that his career record is quite underwhelming.

Good game from Naso. 6-2, *0-1. Just to add to my previous post, Corrie has a Futures W-L record of 10-12 on clay. Hard to believe based on today's performance.

An ace seals a hold to 30. 6-2, 1-1*

Naso holds. Seems to be cutting down the UEs and slicing the ball a bit more on the BH. Corrie didn't seem to enjoy playing a short sliced ball. 6-2, *1-2

Danger as Corrie slips to 15-40

Yep, we're certainly reading from the same script !!!

I'm a big fan of Ed's based on (a) having seen him play a brilliant Q1 wimbly match (although several more knowledgeable people said that was his best match for ages) and (b) having a soft spot for the player who comes onto the scene a little later, playing well, having followed an atypical path and without much help from the powers that be.

I'm sure that others will tell you better than me about his record (is it underwhelming ? he was WR 554 this time last year, and mid 750s this time the year before - it's  a great progress) but as I understand he obviously played US college tennis and then took a little time adjusting to the pro-circuit - it's not like he's been standing still ! And I don't think he's ever going to race ahead - it's a good, committed, attractive game he plays but not a spectacular one.

Oops - the time to write this he's just got broken cry
