Sad reflection that from 20/32 we only manage 1 semi finalist. Players like Anna Smith Fitzy and Mel a couple of years ago would have walked into the semis. We are struggling below our top players up to Lisas ranking. The mens game is the opposite of course.

maybe so but Mel is on the wane and has been for a couple of years.  There is hope though with Pippa Horn Katy Dunne and Dasha all coming up the rankings.

Does anyone know is Anna Smith still having problems with her leg she was heavily bandaged at the Roehampton tourney. Has not kicked on since Edinburgh in May.

Is Pippa intending to go the American college route ?

A few years ago she looked a hell of a prospect and sounded very ambutious.

Now that she is seemingly fully fit, clear I presume of school and beginning to make some strides in senior competition, in many ways I'd like to see how much she can really progress in seniors in the short to medium term.

And hopefully Katie Boulter, Maia Lumsden and Anna Brogan too.

Anybody know the latest with Eleanor Dean?

Does anyone know the GB US college players ?

i.e. Sam obviously graduated and hit the tennis tour flying a couple of years ago. Pippa sounds as though she wants to follow the same route, with tennis as her ultimate goal but using college as a way to 'develop herself' as a tennis player first, as she put it.

Tiffany, Sophie et al have been pretty impressive over here this summer but they still are a couple of years off graduation.

Are there any serious GB players set to graduate this summer?

Personally, I think the youngsters (17 and 18 year-olds) are too young yet to make predictions and too young (in the vast majority of cases) to make any impression on the professional tour for a good 3 or 4 years. Lots of potential though.

And don;t forget Lucy - she says she'll be top 500 by the end of autumn, and top 200-ish by this time next year . . .

But would like to know if there are any girls lurking in the US, just ready to launch their tour careers . . .

Thanks. Perfect.

From looking it up, I believe that she's got one more year and will graduate next year in 2014.

But she's certainly been winning 'player of the year' awards and all that sort of thing, having had her second undefeated singles season and leading her team to the national championship title (if I understood it all right).

So hopefully next year she'll be back and raring to go as a professional.

Anyone know anyone else of a similar age?

Speaking of college tennis, this was posted on the GBTG forum by their administrator:

"GBTG are delighted to announce that thanks to ASICS UK, there is a funded tennis scholarship available at the university of east london. It can be for undergrad or post grad. It consists of £2K per year plus £1k worth of physiotherapy and athlete support services as well as free performance tennis squads and a traveling coach.

At UEL it is possible to combine a masters with playing pro as you can do just 2 modules per year on a part time program at a full cost of £3000 making it a cost of £1000 per year including coaching!

Additional GBTG grants may be possible for any British applicants.

To apply or for more information please contact r.m.buscombe@uel.ac.uk"

Thank you to everybody for all that info and names.

I am going to spend tomorrow morning happily googling it all - I know very little about those players or the college system (in passing, I found the story about Evan (ewan?) Hoyt and how it had all gone horribly wrong at the last minute because of some daft 10 week contract a couple of years ago).

Thanks again

Jade Curtis was in top 500 though as opposed to amy Sergeant who struggled to achieve ranking points

Not to put a downer on Jades achievements but I believe her college competes in a smaller division. Amy Sargeant should have graduated this year. She's at the same college as Daneika.

In May, Amy won the Florida leg of the US Open national playoffs, which gets her into the US Open's rough equivalent of the Wimbledon qualifying wild card playoffs, which will take place during the New Haven WTA event the week after Cincy.

I say 'rough equivalent' because it's far more open than the Wimbledon version, with anyone able to enter the regional qualifiers (infamously, Redfool got slaughtered in the men's event at one of the other ones recently)

On what I saw about three/four years ago I cannot see Amy progressing to the main qualifying of the US  open unless she has improved dramatically

I'm glad Amy entered. Not sure whether she has serious designs on going pro. Other gb girls in the US are: Elisha Gabb, Ruth Seabourne, Sam Vickers (could be a good prospect when she graduates), Jennifer Ren, Alex Clark, Emma Devine, Georgina Sellyn, Nat Beazant... as well as the aforementioned Sophie and Annie Watts, Daneika Borthwick, Jade Curtis, Jo Henderson, Tiffany William, Amy Sargeant, and Bridget Folland (who may not have started yet).
