I thought Alex Ward had pulled out of this tournament, but he has just tweeted from Spain. Could simply be doing some training there, or perhaps he's safely in the MD this week. Hope so
Contrary to what multiple websites reported Alex Ward is playing here.
L32: Alexander Ward WR 355 v Arnau Brugues Davi (ESP) WR 271
The winner is likely to play the top seed (some guy called Busta) in round 2.
Edit: apart from the typos, only those who know no better, i.e. (mostly) monolingual Brits, would refer to him as "Busta", that being his mother's name. Should be "Carreño Busta" if you wish to use his full name, "Carreño" for short.

Just me or is there a massive surge in players trying challengers over the summer? Im pleased though, of course. Come on Marzi!
I think it's got as much to do with the fact that there are actually are a few Challengers each week this summer, as opposed to hardly any each week (especially if you exclude S America) earlier in the year, which in turn meant those that did take place were ridiculously strong. It's still good to see a few of them going for it though and I do wonder how many have seen what Alex Ward has done starting from a relatively modest ranking and thought maybe they should give it a go too.
Or maybe the LTA have found a way to encourage them to take the risk more often - I had an interesting chat with someone from the LTA about that as a result of a chance meeting at Wimbledon.
