I get the feeling it was the draw that went mad rather than RJA (*) - i.e. the new draw (now on the Lexington site too) shows Dan and James playing the same seeds, but all the seeds seem to have shifted down, as if they forgot to include Marchenko or Rochus and then amended the draw to add them in without doing a redraw. Don't think I've ever seen that before!
(*) Edit: as RJA has just confirmed above

On further investigation it appears that they originally seeded on the basis of rankings at the entry deadline rather than current rankings. Obviously the error was spotted and the seedings changed accordingly.
The original draw was
(1) Illya Marchenko (UKR) vs. Denys Molchanov (UKR) (Q) vs. Hiroki Moriya (JPN) (WC) Eric Quigley (USA) vs. Peter Polansky (CAN) Matthew Barton (AUS) vs. (6) James Duckworth (AUS) (4) Malek Jaziri (TUN) vs. James McGee (IRL) (Q) vs. (SE) Austin Krajicek (USA) Steven Diez (CAN) vs. (WC) Alexis Musialek (FRA) Farrukh Dustov (UZB) vs. (5) Alex Kuznetsov (USA) (8) Tatsuma Ito (JPN) vs. Daniel Evans (GBR) Adam Feeney (AUS) vs. (Q) (WC) Filip Peliwo (CAN) vs. John-Patrick Smith (AUS) (SE) Benjamin Mitchell (AUS) vs. (3) Olivier Rochus (BEL) (7) Bradley Klahn (USA) vs. Frank Dancevic (CAN) Maxime Authom (BEL) vs. (Q) (WC) Mitchell Krueger (USA) vs. Matt Reid (AUS) James Ward (GBR) vs. (2) Ruben Bemelmans (BEL)

I agree that is is a decent draw for Dan. Ito is a good enough player that Dan will have to take the match seriously but his form this year has been pretty poor so it is very winnable and obviously if you beat a seed in round 1 you have an "easier" match in round 2.
I get the feeling that the next 5-6 weeks could be make or break for Dan. 3 challengers probably followed by a week off (there is a 15K future in Canada that he could play that week) and then hopefully US Open qualifying (he should make the cut).
Ah, that would make sense,.. I'm still quite surprised they didn't scrap the draw and do a redraw, though if it was an innocent mistake, it seems fair enough. Not sure it helps our boys though ...

I suppose they didn't feel the need to redraw as the 8 seeds were the same 8 payers. They just had to swap them round.
Evo and Ward are playing together in the doubles here but in the round 1 they have drawn the top seeds Raja and Sharan, who won this week's ATP 250 in Bogota.

Lousy draw!
R1: (1) Purav Raja & Divij Sharan (IND/IND) CR 152 vs Dan Evans & James Ward CR 1430
