RE: Week 26/27 - Wimbledon women's main draw - grass

Unfortunately Pennetta played much better than expected and Bally having played reasonably well in the first but folded in the second.

Bally was too obvious in her play Pennetta read her game too well. Too many short balls. Amazing return from smash volley in the 2nd set.

Bally was only expected to have a good chance of winning because she played so well in Nottingham and won a round at Eastbourne, so it would be very unfair if the press had a go at her for losing to someone who played better than most people were expecting, disappointing as it is (for her a lot more than for us, obviously) that she didn't have a great day herself and didn't really take her chances.

Coming into today, Bally had won as many matches at Wimbledon (7) as our other 6 women in the main draw this year put together, so she's the last Brit to deserve any WC-related flak.

Sorry for Elena but, yes, Flavia was several levels above.

Huge well done to Monica Puig, 19 years old, from Puerto Rico, who just put out Sara Errani, with great panache.

Errani will be quite relieved, at least she wasn't 'golden setted' this year.

Flavia was very clever, and better than when I saw her at RG and Strasbourg - she was really fighting herself on both those occasions despite the success in the latter event. BH was particularly poor. As that was on her best surface, I thought she would really struggle on the grass, and Bally had an even chance.

Credit to Flavia though, very shrewd game, and it's nice to see her getting back as her guileful style is very scarce in the game any more.

As has sometimes happened in her career, I felt Bally wanted it too much today. The Mail article won't have helped. My admiration and appreciation fro Elena, her career, and what she is doing in EBAT is 100 un-affected. I still think she's wonderful, and dread the day when she does finally hang up the racquet.

Beautiful lob from Murray... she's 2-0 down and struggling to win points (just being hit off court at the moment).

Sam unfortunately 3-0 down (but playing pretty poorly so no real surprise)

3-0 down watching this game online whilst watching kyle. Murray will do well to stay close here I think.

Giorgi has put on a bit of muscle since I last watched her! Not Stosur levels, but very noticable.

Interesting to hear Anne joining the commentary team for the BBC, I remember her talking about that being a goal of hers before her career picked up and she made top 50. I think that might be the best option for her, it's a long fight back into the top 150 and her game doesn't have the sharp edge that she used to have.

Jo played well. I think she is a strange player from the British publics perspective as she hasn't been in the media spotlight like the other top 5 girls so we never really know what to expect. She showed what a small margin there is between the best and the rest by collapsing for no real reason at 5-5 but a decent show.

I didn't watch Sam but clearly out of her depth at this level. Nice career milestone for her though.

Bally was really playing a better version of herself in Pennetta- slightly less solid than her opponent and not as comfortable in the forecourt. the odds showed Ballwas favourite which is crazy. Pennetta is another level unfortunately and this match sort of set the tone for the day. That said Bally did do well and fought as expected in th first set before Pennetta pulled away n

The day was disappointing, but expected. Really annoy

Murray has a BP but it's snuffed out by another big Giorgi serve. Sam is fighting hard, but the Italian is playing better overall.

Sam staves off set points to hold

3-5*

BUT the Italian responds by gliding through her service game (DF aside) to take the 1st set 6-3.
