Week 24 - ATP 250 - London Queen's Club, UK (grass)

Andy Murray should be the top seed in the main draw, while James Ward, Dan Evans, Ed Corrie and Kyle Edmund all have main draw wild cards. The qualifying draw is out (and not full!) http://www.lta.org.uk/3G/Tournaments/AEGONChampionships/Draws/2013/QS.pdf ... up here in a few minutes.

Sorry, Steven, but I just had to edit, as, somehow, I don't think the Queen's event is played on clay...! wink  disbelief

Does this mean that in order to fill the qualifying spots they are able/willing to accept top doubles player who have no singles ranking at all  - are there really  insufficient ranked alternatives  - I'm wondering why the likes of Josh Milton or Dan Cox or other Brits who want to get themselves grass practice and/or a ton of points, don't get themselves on this list?

We've still to see who is all appearing at Nottingham, and Nottingham actually looks as if it will be considerably easier to earn similar ranking points ( largely caused by Queens having a 56 man main draw )

Both Queens & Nottingham - 5 points for qualifying ( Queens 3 for reaching the FQR ).

Winning one main draw round - Queens 10, Nottingham 8

So to me it's a bit like the women with Birmingham, understandable why so many are going to Nottingham ( if that proves the case with the guys ).

And even after accepting the unranked doubles players there are still 6 byes left in the draw! Does that mean that anyone with the necessary registration details (costs around £30 if I remember rightly?) could have entered and had the opportunity to play at Queens with prize money of 560 Euros at stake for one win?

I remember forum members have entered futures qualifying in the past, is this a missed opportunity!?

I was wondering that too, but I think maybe you need a singles or doubles ranking or a wild card to get into qualifying for ATP events even if there are spaces in the draws. (I'd normally check but it's getting late!)

If not, the temptation to have a go (embarrassing though it would be) would be enormous!

It seems even stranger given that even after the other Nottingham main draw wild cards are announced, 6 of the GB top 25 will be unaccounted for. (see Nottingham thread)

Btw, I'm amazed Jamie B is playing here when he would surely have been a shoe-in for a main draw wild card in Nottingham.

QR1:  Marcelo Melo (BRA) UNR defeated Alex Bogdanovic WR 272 by 3-6 6-3 7-6(5) bleh

Alex served a double fault when he was match point down...  I was tempted to say yesterday to those who said they liked the look of his draw that it was precisely the kind of occasion when he was capable of falling flat on his face, but I kept my own counsel in the hope that my private expectation would be confounded! hmm

Groth served it out 6-2 in the third. Final ace count was 39. Goodall had just two break points in the match, both in the last game. However he held serve easily enough himself until 4-4 in the second when he seemingly collapsed.

I think Jamie will be wanting to impress and put himself in the picture for a Wild Card at Wimbledon. More deserving than Evo in my opinion. Queens is more in the spotlight than Nottingham after all.

Jammy or what? Evo draws an Argentine player who, according to ITF, has never played a senior or junior match on grass before!

L56: (WC) Dan Evans WR 299 v Guido Pella (ARG) WR 83 (= CH)
L56: (WC) James Ward WR 207 v Ivan Dodig WR 51 (CH 32 in 2011, beat Tsonga to make the QFs here last year)
L56: (WC) Kyle Edmund WR 443 v (16) Grega Zemlja (SLO) WR 50 (CH 49 last month)
L56: (WC) Ed Corrie WR 325 v Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) WR 101 (CH 31 in 2010)

Not only does James play one likely member of the Croatian DC team in R1 - the winner gets Cilic in R2! The winners of the last two matches above meet in R2.

Andy's 'route': Mahut/Williams - (15) Andújar/Llodra/Matosevic/Q - (7) Dolgo/(12) Rosol - (4) Tsonga - (2) Berdych

I take the point of the points being similar but.............the prize money is VERY different, these guys have to live. Also, what did a player come into the game for if not to play at the highest level. It will be back to futures for many of these guys afterwards....why not have a crack at Queens when the opportunity is there!

Yep, pretty much the dream draw when you are looking to get your first main draw win in an ATP event. Would be pretty mortified if Evans lost this as his game is very well suited to playing on grass against people without much pedigree on the surface. He shouldn't have to take too many risks and I would expect him to slice pretty much every backhand (and a few forehands) and see how Pella likes the low bounce.

I have a lot of time for Jamie Baker but I am not sure on what basis he would be deserving of a wild card. Since coming through qualifying at the Australian Open (where he had a nice draw) he has a pretty terrible year picking up just 24 points in the past 5 months. Yes I know that he has had minor injury problems and he probably missed three events because of being in the Davis Cup squad, and yes I think he was treated badly over that, but that doesn't change the objective analysis that he isn't playing well or getting the results and unless he does well here he will drop out of the top 300. Being a good guy and working hard is great but it doesn't making you deserving of a Wimbledon wild card, if it did players like Marsalek and Gabb would be deserving of a wild card and I don't think anyone will make the case for them.

As for Evo I am ambivalent as the whether or not he deserves one. He has been well rewarded by the LTA for his Davis cup heroics and his recent good form but I wouldn't object too strongly if it was thought that he shouldn't be given too much. Of course if he got a couple of wins here he would be shoe in for one as he would make top 250.
