Week 23 - Challenger (€64,000) - Nottingham (grass) - doubles

Given the number of Brits in the doubles draw, I'm resorting to my usual trick of starting a separate thread so that the results don't get buried among the singles chit chat. wink

R1:  (WC) Ken Skupski & Neal Skupski WR 616 vs (wait for it...) (WC) David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 396 disbelief
R1:  Chris Guccione & Adil Shamasdin (AUS/CAN) WR 191 vs Jamie Delgado & Matt Ebden (AUS) WR 166
R1:  (WC) Lewis Burton & Dan Evans WR 886 vs (3) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) WR 133

Oh no. That is utterly stinky. Although I suppose it does guarantee that one of the pairings will get through. Sigh.

I think that's the only positive complexion you can put on that draw, Spectator.  hmm

Cuts of 233 for main draw and 237 for qualifying.

Not sure if it's a sign of things to come but I'm guessing Klein didn't get a wild card for this as I'm sure he would have wanted to play being the current doubles world number 122.

Skupski's take the first very convincingly 6-1

But Sean & the Doc are fighting back:  *4-0 in the second.

Only to be pegged back by the brothers:  S & S 4-4*.

Sean & the Doc are unable to come back a second time:

R1:  (WC) Ken Skupski & Neal Skupski WR 616 defeated (WC) David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 396 by 1 & 5

The top seeds, Santiago González & Scott Lipsky, or the German qualifiers, Benni Becker & Michael Berrer, in the QF.

The Skupski brothers looked pretty good there I thought.

Very glad for the Skupskis (UK's answer to the Bryan Brothers and all) ... but wish that the statement of intent at Challenger level hadn't come at the expense of Rice and Thornley, who just have too much bad luck with draws!

*****

And, curiously, a Brit-Aussie partnership on both sides of the net in the QF, though I imagine Jamie & JP have the edge:

QF:  Jamie Delgado & Matt Ebden (AUS) WR 166n vs (3) Jamie Murray & John Peers (AUS) WR 133

At least a guaranteed Brit semi-finalist in the bottom half of the draw. wink
